daws323By Nate Anderson: Former BBBofC British light welterweight champion Lenny Daws (19-1-1, 7 KOs) overcame a bad start to defeat Peter McDonagh (13-14, 2 KOs) by a narrow 10-round decision on Saturday night to capture the vacant BBBofC English light welterweight title at the York Hall, in Bethnal Green, London. Referee John Keane scored the fight 97-94 in Daws’ favor.

The bout didn’t start off well for Daws as McDonagh, 31, nailed him with repeated big right hands in the first two rounds of the fight. At this point in the fight, it was frankly hard to believe that McDonagh had 13 losses on his record because his right hand looked superb and he was giving Daws a very difficult time with this punch alone.

However, after the 2nd round McDonagh faded badly, losing power with his right and throwing far fewer punches than he did early on in the bout. Daws then took over the fight using his relentless pressure to pound McDonagh and win round after round. Though Daws kept winning the rounds, most of them were close due to Daws’ lack of defense for McDonagh’s right hands.

“Peter McDonagh is a game kid,” Daws said after the fight. “I knew what he was going to do. He was going to come straight at me and punch straight away. As the fight wore on, he [McDonagh] started to dance and mee me around a bit. As it went on, my body shots started going in and I knew I was getting to him.”
