Rodriguez Defeats Alvarez

By Sam Gregory: In the main event Delvin Rodriguez 24-2 with 14 KO’s took on southpaw Shamone Alvarez 20-2 with 11 KO’s in a scheduled 12 round welterweight IBF title eliminator bout.

Alvarez started out very strong in the first round landing several good shots but seemed to fade towards the end of the opening stanza. Going into the second round Rodriguez settled into the fight and took command and held control through the middle rounds.

In the fifth and sixth rounds Alvarez looked strong again landing solid shots as Rodriguez stood straight up having a tough time with his opponent’s southpaw style. By the end of the seventh round the unofficial score card had the fight even.

In the eighth round Rodriguez came on very strong again landing good solid shots and finished the round strong. After the eighth round Rodriguez told his corner he broke his right wrist. In the ninth round Rodriguez threw over 60 punches but only three with his right hand. Even so, Rodriguez finished strong and won the round. In the 10th round Rodriguez began using his right hand a lot more and in the 11th round dropped Alvarez with a hard right hand.

In the opening minute of the 12th round Rodriguez got caught with a punch he didn’t see and seemed to be hurt. He came back in the round as both men went toe to toe until the final bell.

When the fight was over the judge’s cards were read 115-112 and 114-113 twice all for the winner by unanimous decision Delvin Rodriguez.
