Quillin vs. Brown

Undefeated middleweight prospect Peter Quillin (16-0, 13 KOs will be fighting tomorrow night against Thomas Brown (11-3-1, 7 KOs) on the undercard of Wladimir Klitschko vs. Sultan Ibragimov at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Quillin, 24, will be taking a second seat to middleweight challenger John Duddy, who will also be fighting on the card against what will likely be an overmatched Walid Smichet. Also making their appearance will be other middleweight prospect, Joe Green, who together with Quillin make up arguably the best middleweight pair in America.

Quillin, however, clearly appears to be a notch above Duddy, 28, in that Quillin has enormous punching power in either hand, and can end a fight with one punch. At 6’1″, Quillin has good size for a middleweight, and long arms. His size has enabled him to occasionally fight as a super middleweight so that he could get in much needed fights, although he’s essentially a middleweight.

Quillin’s amateur career was rather limited, having only fought 15 times while an amateur, Quillin is quickly learning as a professional how to box. His power, however, is making a lot of his technical flaws at this stage. He still has a lot of work to do before he’s fully ready to take on the toughest fighters in the middleweight division. Still, with his strength, he’d be an even bet to defeat most of the current fighters in the top 10, including Duddy.

Nicknamed “Kid Chocolate” after the famous Cuban fighter Eligio SardiƱas Montalvo, who fought in the 1930s, Quillin, half Cuban himself, looks similar to Montalvo. Though the similarities end in terms of looks, for Quillin is a genuine knockout artist, whereas Montalvo was more of a boxer-puncher. Of Quillin’s 13 KOs, all of them have come in the first two rounds of his fights, a testament to his incredible punching power. As for tomorrow’s night’s opponent Thomas Brown, he’ll likely find it difficult to make it beyond the third.
