In a battle of junior middleweight prospects, Carson Jones (13-5-1, 7 KOs) defeated Jose Luis Gonzalez (11-2, 9 KOs) by six-round majority decision on Friday night at the Million Dollar Elm Casino, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Jones, 21, use his speed advantage to win the first round of the fight, hitting Gonzalez with frequent right hands and uppercuts. However, Gonzalez, who appeared two inches taller than his listed 5’11” height, kept coming forward, applying continous pressure on Jones, and by the 2nd round, it was Gonzalez that was controlling the action.

In rounds two through four, Jones looked tired, and was making a mistake of standing in the line of of the slower Gonzalez and taking big shots. Unfortunately for Gonzalez, he was unable to use his height advantage, as he mostly came in close to Jones, trying to fight him on the inside where he wasn’t nearly as effective. In rounds 2-4, Gonzalez was able to use to back Jones up and keep him fighting off the ropes. The bout suddenly turned around again late in the 4th, when Jones tagged Gonzalez while coming out of a break. The crowd got into it, and this seemed to energize Jones, bringing him back into the fight.

In rounds Jones threw numerous combinations, outworking Gonzalez who was mostly limited to his one shot at a time offense. In the sixth and final round, Jones landed almost at will on Gonzalez, and badly outworked him in the final two minutes of the round. Gonzalez was cut badly over his left eye when he clashed heads with Jones. This made it even worse for Gonzalez, as he could barely see out of his left eye, and had to squint for the remainder of the round while taking countless uppercuts from Jones.

The final scores were 57-57, 57-56 and 58-56. It was a good win for Jones, though I don’t see him or Gonzalez ever going anywhere in boxing.
