De La Hoya talks Golovkin as potential opponent for Canelo

golovkin6By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions surprisingly mentioned Gennady Golovkin’s name as one of the potential opponents for his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) for his next bout in November. Golovkin’s name was mentioned along with James Kirkland and Miguel Cotto, but you can dismiss Cotto because he definitely isn’t available for November.

De La Hoya said this as quoted by Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated: “Gennady Golovkin. ‘GGG’ is a dangerous fighter. That’s what Canelo is about.”

De La Hoya to meet with Canelo next week to decide his next fight

delahoya789By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya plans on meeting with former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) to discuss who the 23-year-old fighter should face next following his 12 round split decision win over Erislandy Lara (19-2-2, 12 KO’s) last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya says that they have several names that they’re looking at for possible opponents for Canelo later in 2015.

De La Hoya wants to match Canelo with Kirkland and Cotto after Lara fight

canelo78By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya is already planning out former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next two fights and working on the basis that he beats Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) this Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya told ESPN that he wants the soon to be 24-year-old Canelo to fight #5 IBF, #5 WBO, #11 WBC James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) and then WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) next year, possibly on Cinco de Mayo on May 2nd.

De La Hoya: We see things with Lara that Canelo can take advantage of

delahoya969By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya has been sounding more and more like the trainer of his franchise fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) than the promoter for him as his fight date against Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs) draws nearer.

Canelo and Lara will be squaring off this Saturday night in a fight that could have huge ramifications for each of their careers.

De La Hoya says that they saw flaws in the game of Austin Trout that Canelo was able to take advantage of last year in his 12 round decision win over the American fighter. De La Hoya says they see equally significant flaws in the game of the Cuban Lara that they feel Canelo will be able to exploit on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya makes statement, but says very little

de la hoya33By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya finally came forward today to make a statement following the resignation of Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer this week, but instead of directly addressing that issue, De La Hoya merely sent a positive message that came across as a pep talk of sorts.

Here’s what De La Hoya said: “Golden Boy Promotions is moving ahead on all fronts. We look forward to continuing and expanding our key position in the boxing world and to providing the public with the very best the sport has to offer.”

Change is good for Oscar and Schaefer

By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: Change can be good. It’s never bad unless one mismanages his/her time while making the change. The abrupt stepping down of Richard Schaefer as CEO of Golden Boy Promotions has done just that; brought about change. I refuse to side with either because I don’t know where either would be without each other.

Could Richard Schaefer be collateral damage in the Cold War?

schaefer2By Robbie Bannatyne: There has much been speculation recently about the internal conflict within Golden Boy Promotions, said to be the result of fissures in the relationship between Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer. At the same time, rumours also abound that De La Hoya has made attempts to bury the hatchet with Bob Arum by going to meet the Top Rank boss at his house recently.

Regardless of whether Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya make peace and decide to re-establish a working relationship, the issue between the feuding television networks Showtime and HBO is still not resolved. Still, if De La Hoya and Bob Arum could recapture the bond that was broken throughout their conflict it would certainly be a step in the right direction.

De La Hoya: We’ll find someone to beat Adrien Broner

broner`11By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions wasn’t too happy about Adrien Broner’s post-fight comment last Saturday night in an interview with Showtime in which Broner used coarse language in making a remark about how he had beaten Carlos Molina. De La Hoya now says he’d like to find someone that can beat the 24-year-old Broner. The WBC has already suspended Broner from their rankings for his comment, and they’re waiting for an apology from him.

“What are we going to do with Adrien Broner? I didn’t like what he said and at the moment I was shocked,” De La Hoya told Fightnews. “What we can do is find someone to beat him in the ring and hopefully beat him soon.”

De La Hoya: I’ll train Maidana for Mayweather rematch

maidana77By Allan Fox: Oscar De La Hoya says he’s open to help train Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) for a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KO’s) next September if he needs the help. De La Hoya would work alongside Maidana’s current trainer Robert Garcia and give him pointers in how to beat Mayweather.

De La Hoya lost a close and controversial 12 round split decision in 2007. De La believes that boxing fans will demand a rematch between Mayweather and Maidana due to the competitive nature, and the somewhat controversial decision. In De La Hoya’s mind, you can make a case for the Mayweather-Maidana fight having been more of a draw than a victory for either guy last Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Oscar De La Hoya says Mayweather should be 43-3

floyd0012By Raj Parmar: Earlier today on his twitter account, former boxer and current Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya has stated that he has spent a lot of time watching Floyd Mayweather’s old fights and has come to the conclusion that Floyd should really be 43-3 instead of 46-0.

Oscar and Floyd have had bad blood between them ever since their 2007 mega fight, which Floyd won by split decision after a heated build-up which saw legitimate animosity develop between the two fighters. Oscar is likely affirming that he believes Floyd lost to himself, Jose Luis Castillo and last night’s match-up with Marcos Maidana.
