Ricardo Mayorga, Campos and Samuel Peter in action on September 27th

mayorga4554By Allan Fox: In a card that some boxing fans are calling an old timer’s card, 40-year-old former two division world champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-8-1, 23 KOs) will be in action against an opponent still to be determined in an 8 round bout on September 27th in light middleweight action at the OKC Downtown Airpark, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA.

Mayorga hasn’t seen action in three years since being stopped in the 12th round by Miguel Cotto in March of 2011. Mayorga surprisingly gave Cotto a lot of problems in that fight, forcing him to box instead of slugging with him.

Macklin vs. Campas

By Chet Mills: Talented but flawed middleweight Matthew Macklin (20-2, 16 KOs) will be fighting for the first time under new trainer Buddy McGirt on Saturday when Matthew takes on Mexican journeyman fighter Luis Ramon “Yory Boy” Campas (91-11, 73 KOs) at the National Stadium, in Dublin, Ireland. Macklin, 25, recently quit British trainer Billy Graham in a move done for Matthew to work on other areas of his game, such as defense and boxing, rather than the brawling, aggressive style of Ricky Hatton, who also fights under Graham. Macklin, an exciting fighter with skills not unlike a smaller, younger Evander Holyfield, wasn’t really comfortable with the brawling style of fighting where he was taking a lot of unnecessary punishment in many of his bouts.

Asikainen Stops Campas

campas464.jpgBy Eric Schmidt: Former International Boxing Federation light middleweight champion Luis Ramon Campas (91-11, 73 KOs) was stopped in the 7th round on Friday night against Amin Asikainen (24-1, 16 KOs) at the Toolo Sports Hall, in Helsinki, Finland. Campas, 36, who normally fights at light middleweight, looked much smaller against middleweight Asikainen, 32, who happens to be the best boxer in Finland.

Campas had problems with Asikainen’s superior reach and size for most of the fight, as he was unable to get within punching distance without having to eat several shots while on the way in. Once in close, Asikainen would often tie him up to prevent him from punching. A minute into the 7th round, Asikainen tagged Campas with a big right hand while he was trying to come inside, hurting him badly and causing him to back up. Asikainen followed after him, and hit him with repeated right hands, driving Campas to the ropes, where Asikainen finished him off with three more fight hands before the referee Erkki Merone could call a halt to the bout at 0:56 of the 7th round.
