Roach doesn’t want Pacquiao to stand in front of Rios for any length of time

pac8By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach says his fighter can’t afford to stand in front of the hard hitting Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) on November 23rd at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China. Although Roach thinks Rios is made to order for Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s), he still doesn’t want Manny to be standing in front of him for too.

Remembering how Pacquiao’s last fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, ended, it’s not hard to understand why Roach is so concerned about Pacquiao not standing in front of Rios for too long.

Povetkin to be trained by Roach for Wladimir fight

roach234By Allan Fox: WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (26-0, 18 KO’s) will have famous trainer Freddie Roach in his corner when he faces IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (60-3, 51 KO’s) in their fight on October 5th, according to Steve Kim.

Povetkin has had a number of trainers in the past couple of years, and it looks like Roach will be the new guy at least for this fight. Whether Roach remains as Povetkin’s trainer will likely depend on how well Povetkin performs against Wladimir. With Povetkin getting dominated and stopped, which is a likely scenario, could result in Roach moving on.

Roach: Pacquiao only has a couple fights left after the Rios bout

roach45By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach says his fighter Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) is about at the end of his career now with a mere three fights left in his estimation as he approaches his fight on November 23rd against fellow Top Rank fighter Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China.

Pacquiao turns 35 in December, and Roach wants him to fight Juan Manuel Marquez before he retires and whoever else promoter Bob Arum can dig up for him before he calls it quits.

Roach said to Fighthubtv.com “I want Manny in an all-out fight. It’s the young vs. the old and it’s very dangerous, but that’s why I was looking for the Marquez rematch. But unfortunately we’ll continue until that fight comes around again. Win or lose, Manny only has a couple fights left in him after this one.”

Froch beats Kessler, says Roach

froch65By Scott Gilfoid: Freddie Roach believes that IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) will beat WBA super middleweight Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) when the two fighters meet up for their pay per view rematch on May 25th in London, UK. Roach thinks Froch, 35, is too young for the 34-year-old.

Roach said to RingTV “I think Froch is too young and too much for him at this point. I think Froch wins by a decision.”

I hate to be the one to break this to Roach, but Kessler is actually the younger fighter and he looks a lot younger than Froch as well. I mean, I don’t knock Roach for being ignorant about the ages of the fighters. After all, he’s not a writer and it’s not his job to keep up with those kinds of things. That’s my job. I keep track of ages and junk like that.

Roach wants Pacquiao to KO Rios to pay him back for mocking him

roach4523By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach has another reason why he wants his fighter Manny Pacquiao to knockout Brandon Rios in their fight on November 23rd in Macau, China.

Rios was videotaped doing a poor imitation of Roach three years ago in which Rios was shaking in apparent mock of Roach’s Parkinson disease problem. It didn’t go over well with many boxing fans, and it clearly rubbed Roach the wrong way, although he says it didn’t really bother him all that much.

Roach said to ESPN’s Dan Rafael “They were trying to get under my skin, and they can do what they want. They can do all the shaking they want…this fight is going to be a great payback for me. I can’t wait for the fight. It’s the fight I wanted for Manny.”

Khan might as well be back with Freddie Roach

khan111By Scott Gilfoid: After seeing how badly Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) struggled to defeat the non-top 15 ranked Julio Diaz (40-8, 29 KO’s) last night in his controversial 12 round unanimous decision win in Sheffield, Khan might as well be back with his old trainer Freddie Roach because his new trainer Virgil Hunter doesn’t seem to be bringing any positive changes in Khan’s game as far as I can tell.

Khan was hurt at least five times in the fight last night and dropped in the 4th. The fact that Khan was getting hurt over and over again by a fighter like Diaz tells me that Khan might as well go back to Freddie Roach at the Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles because I think he was a better fighter for Roach than he is with Hunter.

Roach: Marquez wants close to a 50-50 split for Pacquiao 5th fight

pac890By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach isn’t sure if a fifth fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez can be put together because the 39-year-old Marquez wants parity in the money split between the two fighters.

Marquez has consistently taken a much smaller money split in his four previous fights with the Filipino but after knocking him out in the 6th round last December, Marquez wants close to a 50-50 deal to fight him again. You can’t blame him because Pacquiao’s last two fights against Marquez have drawn 1.4 million and 1.15 million pay per view buys.

Roach: Provodnikov is well prepared for Bradley

provodnikov5By Allan Fox: Trainer Freddie Roach believes that his fighter light welterweight Ruslan Provodnikov (22-1, 15 KO’s) has dramatically improved since he was beaten by Mauricio Herrera two years ago in a 12 round unanimous decision loss.

Herrera is now the sparring partner for WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (29-0, 12 KO’s), who Provodnikov will be facing this Saturday night at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA.

Roach said to RingTV, “I think he [Provodnikov] is a different fighter than the one that lost. We got the best sparring partners we could to emulate Bradley. We spent a lot of money going out and getting the right guys.”

Roach: Chavez Jr. wants to come back; he better not miss any training sessions

roach11By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach says former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) is interested in coming back within the Wildcard Gym fold in Los Angeles, California. Chavez Jr. recently said he was shopping for a new trainer after losing to Sergio Martinez last September.

Roach said to Fighthubtv.com “Bob [Arum] tells me he [Chavez Jr] wants me back, and I told him ‘I’ll only train him if he shows up at the gym.’ I said ‘the first day he misses and I’ll go home.’ I will train him again but only if he shows up every day.”

Freddie Roach turns 53 today

roach34By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach turns 53-years-old today, and he’s obviously hoping to make 2013 a better year than 2012. At one time Roach was the trainer in demand, as he had guys like Jorge Linares, Amir Khan, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Manny Pacquiao all humming along career-wise.

Now, however, all of those fighters are struggling, and Roach is suddenly not shining the way he was previously when his guys were on top. Roach still has Pacquiao and a number of top fighters in his Wildcard Gym stable, but it’s not quite like it was before.
