By Jeff Aranow: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) has a very dangerous fight in front of him in his May 6 fight against the bigger super middleweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, according to middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler. He thinks it’s a risky fight for Canelo, because he’s moving up from the 154 pound division up to the super middleweight division to fight a big puncher in Chavez Jr.

Loeffler says that Chavez Jr. is known for adding a great deal of weight after he rehydrates for his fights, and it’s going to be very difficult for Canelo to be facing someone that big inside the ring.

Watch: Golovkin training video from Big Bear

YouTube video

By Jim Dower: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is hard at work in training camp high in the mountains of Big Bear California for his March 18 fight against Daniel Jacobs. This is by far the toughest fight of Golovkin’s 11-year pro career. In the video, Golovkin is seen running in the snowy mountains of Big Bear California, which he says reminds him of his home country of Kazakhstan.

Being in the mountains for training camp, it helps Golovkin stay focused on his fight against the 29-year-old Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs). There are no distractions for Golovkin in training camp, and he’s able to concentrate fully on getting ready for a very dangerous opponent.

Canelo says he made Golovkin a great offer

Image: Canelo says he made Golovkin a great offer

By Jeff Aranow: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez says he would like to fight middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin and Miguel Cotto after his May 6 fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., but they ask for a lot. Canelo says he made them a good offer for a fight. For now, he’s focused on his next fight against Chavez Jr. on May 6 on HBO PPV from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The offer that was made to Golovkin was reportedly a flat fee. Golovkin wants a percentage cut of the fight money. Golovkin will need to bring in a lot of pay-per-view buys in his next fight against Daniel Jacobs on March 18 for him to have the financial pull to get the percentage split that he and his promoter Tom Loeffler wants against Canelo.

Jacobs must overcome Golovkin’s power says Jones Jr.

Image: Jacobs must overcome Golovkin’s power says Jones Jr.

By Dan Ambrose: Roy Jones Jr. says that Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) must find a way to overcome the punching power of IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) in their fight on March 18. That’s the first priority that Jacobs has in this fight, but not the only one. Jones Jr. also sees Golovkin as having impeccable boxing skills, and quite capable of winning with just his jab alone like he did in his win over former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux in their fight in October 2015.

Golovkin softened Lemieux up with jabs before taking him out with body shots in round 8.
Jacobs is going to have a hard time against Golovkin because it’s such a big step up for him. Jacobs’ management has essentially had him in the tune-up circuit for six years since his loss to Dmitri Pirog in 2010.

Jacobs has the power to hurt Golovkin says Quigley

Image: Jacobs has the power to hurt Golovkin says Quigley

By Jeff Aranow: Unbeaten middleweight contender Jason Quigley (12-0, 10 KOs) is predicting that IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC 160lb champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) will have a lot of problems in his fight next month against WBA ‘regular’ champion Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) on March 18 on HBO pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden in New York.

Quigley sees Jacobs’ punching power and boxing skills as being a problem for Golovkin, especially early on in the fight. Quigley, 25, still believes that Golovkin will eventually be too strong for Jacobs and will wear him down later in the fight, but it depends on how the early rounds play out.

Loeffler says Golovkin could fight Canelo or Chavez Jr.

Image: Loeffler says Golovkin could fight Canelo or Chavez Jr.

By Jeff Aranow: Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions not only views Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as a possible opponent for his fighter IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin for September, but also Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as an option. As far as Loeffler is concerned, the winner of the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight on May 6 will be the possible option for Golovkin in September.

It’s not just Canelo that Loeffler has his eyes on. It’s Chavez Jr. as well. Loeffler also says that if Golovkin wins his fight against Daniel Jacobs on March 18 and then beats the Canelo-Chavez Jr. winner later on this year, then a fight against Miguel Cotto could be an option for December.

By Adam Kallanous: A fighter’s chin is a term that refers to his ability to tolerate physical trauma to the chin or jaw without being knocked unconscious.

Iron or granite would be used to describe a fighter with the ability to take powerful punches to the head, and shrug them off. A glass jaw is used to describe a fighter that lacks this trait, and instead finds themselves on the canvass.
