Six of the best: Top Boxer of 2014?

golovkin94By Gav Duthie: With the year drawing to a close I ask who was the king of the ring for 2014? It has been far from a blockbuster calendar year but it has seen some great performances, some new blood start to make a name for themselves and some solid comebacks. Based on level of performances, ring activity and the quality of opponents these are my 6 of the best.

6. Gennady Golovkin 31-0 (28) – The train keeps rolling through

With a lack of top class fights available at middleweight Golovkin’s philosophy is to remain active. Despite postponing dates in the early part of he year due to a family bereavement GGG has fought three times in 2014. He started the campaign with a much expected win over the durable Osumano Adamo in 7 rounds. Towards the second half of the campaign the Kazakhstan sensation faced two opponents that were said to be stern tests which he passed with ease.

Povetkin stops Carlos Takam

takam6773By Jim Dower: In a surprise stoppage, former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povektin (28-1, 20 KOs) defeated the much heavier #5 WBC Carlos Takam (30-2-1, 23 KOs) by a 10th round stoppage on Friday night to capture the World Boxing Council Silver heavyweight title at the Luzhniki Concert Hall in Moscow, Russia.

Povetkin struggled through much of the fight with the high work rate by the 33-year-old Takam. However, Povetkin hurt Takam in the 9th and put him down on the canvas.

In the 10th, Povetkin knocked Takam down for the second time in the fight in connecting with a hard left hook to the head. Takam was too hurt for the fight to go on. Referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight.

Today’s most underrated fighters

bradley24By Gav Duthie: Some fighters are loved, some are hated as the saying goes the only thing worse is indifference.

There are many boxers today that no matter what they do they seem to fail to get the credit their exploits deserve. Their are many underrated, under appreciated boxers but in my opinion there are 3 in particular fighting today. All 3 are good boxers, near the top of their division, have all been world champions and always face difficult opponents.

Alexander Povetkin vs. Carlos Takam on October 25th in Moscow, Russia

takam77By Allan Fox: Former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (27-1, 19 KOs) will be taking a dangerous fight against #5 WBC, #9 IBF Carlos Takam (30-1-1, 23 KOs) on October 25th in Moscow, Russia.

Povetkin, #3 WBA, is trying to work his way back into a quick title shot after losing his title last October to IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko by a 12 round unanimous decision. Povetkin bounced back from the loss to defeat WBC contender Manuel Charr by a 7th round TKO last May.

Povetkin destroys Charr

YouTube video
By Jim Dower: #5 WBA Alexander Povetkin (27-1, 19 KO’s) showed the difference between him and #7 WBC Manuel Charr (26-2, 15 KO’s) in stopping him in the 7th round to win the vacant WBC International heavyweight title in a mostly one-sided fight at the Luzhniki, in Moscow, Russia.

Povetkin nailed Charr with a 4-punch combination in the 7th round to put Charr down on his back. The fight was then immediately halted due to Charr being too hurt to get back to his feet.

Povetkin nailed Charr with a huge left uppercut to the head that hurt him. Povetkin immediately fired off a looping right hook to the head that snapped Charr’s head around sideways. Povetkin then connected with a nice left hook that sent Charr falling backwards towards the referee. At this point Charr was in the process of falling, but Povetkin then added a tremendous right hand to the head that whip-lashed Charr’s head as he was falling. Charr partially hit the ropes while falling and came to rest on top of a large pad and photographer’s camera.

Alexander Povetkin v Manuel Charr this Friday

charr435By Gav Duthie: With all the recent Froch-Groves hype its easy to forget that Alexander Povetkin 26-1 (18) takes on Manuel Charr 26-1 (15) in Moscow, Russia this Friday night.

In order to avoid fighting for any of Wladimir Klitschko’s titles these two evenly matched heavyweights are adding their names to the long line targeting the WBC belt currently held by Bermaine Stiverne. The WBC international gong is on the line for the winner and would significantly move either fighter up the pecking order for a mandatory position with Stiverne. Manuel Charr is currently rated no. 6 and Povetkin is not yet rated as he was recently the WBA champ. However big bookies favourite Povetkin (1/6) would move right near the top with a win over Charr.

Charr takes risky fight against Povetkin in Moscow, Russia on May 30th

CharrPovetkinBy Allan Fox: The ambitious #7 WBC heavyweight contender Manuel Charr (26-1, 15 KO’s) will be taking a very risky fight for him against former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (26-1, 18 KO’s) this month on May 30th at a still to be determined venue in Moscow, Russia. The two fighters will be battling it out for the vacant WBC International heavyweight title, but that’s not what the main prize is. The winner of the Charr-Povetkin fight will get pushed up the WBC rankings nearer to the top.

For Charr, that’s an ideal situation, but it still won’t solve all of his problems. He’d still need to fight one of the top contenders in the division to become the mandatory, and there’s already a mandatory challenger in place in Deontay Wilder. Bryant Jennings and Michael Perez will be facing each other this month on May 24th in a second WBC heavyweight title eliminator, which means that Charr could wind up waiting for well over a year, possibly more before he gets a shot at the WBC heavyweight title even if he does get by Povetkin.

Chisora wants Alexander Povetkin next in Moscow, Russia

povetkin4543By Scott Gilfoid: WBA/WBO International heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (20-4, 13 KO’s) said last night following his ugly 12 round unanimous decision win over Kevin Johnson (29-5-1, 14 KO’s) that he wants to travel to Moscow, Russia for his next fight to take on former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (26-1, 18 KO’s). If Chisora does actually get this fight then it could mess things up big time for his Summer clash against Tyson Fury. I mean, Povetkin isn’t one of the fodder opponents that Chisora has been picking up wins against recently, and he would have almost every advantage you could think of over Chisora if that fight gets made.

If Chisora wants to get his payday fight against Fury in a WBO heavyweight eliminator bout, as he’s mentioned, then fighting Povetkin is the wrong thing for Chisora to do.
