Deontay Wilder not interested in vacating WBC title

1-deontay-wilder (16)By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it doesn’t look like WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) plans on giving up his WBC title anytime soon. Despite many boxing fans believing that the 6’7” talent will be giving up his WBC title if his management lose the purse bid for his fight against his mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs), Deontay says that’s something he doesn’t want to do.

Deontay isn’t ruling it out though, but he says it’s definitely something that he doesn’t want to do. You can’t blame Deontay if he does vacate though. If his management loses the purse bid, then it would surely mean that he would need to fight Povetkin in his home country of Russia.

Deontay Wilder vs. Alexander Povetkin to go to purse bids

1-deontay-wilder (11)By Scott Gilfoid: The negotiations between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) and his mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) have failed to produce a scheduled fight like they had hoped for. Povetkin, 36, says that they have failed. As such, it will now go to purse bids. The purse bid will be taking place next week on February 26.

“Talks failed, there will be trade negotiations,” Povetkin told TASS earlier today.
This is a negative if it goes to a purse bid because this increases the chance that the fight could take place in Russia. If one of the wealthy Russian promoters decides he wants to stage the Wilder-Povetkin fight, then it’s quite possible he’ll put in such a huge bid that Wilder’s management won’t be able to compete with it.

Deontay Wilder vs. Alexander Povetkin possible for May 21

1-deontay-wilder (8)By Scott Gilfoid: A working date of May 21 is the possible date for the huge fight between the talented 6’7” WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) and #1 WBC mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs). Deontay had been talking recently of wanting to get the fight against Povetkin over with by April, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

However, May 21 is still a good date for the fight. At least it won’t get dragged out until the summer months like the Wladimir Klitschko vs. Tyson Fury rematch, which unbelievably still doesn’t have a date or a venue after all this time.

Povetkin too short for Deontay Wilder

povetkin100By Scott Gilfoid: I believe too much is being made of #1 WBC heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) being a threat to WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs).

Povetkin, 36, is Wilder’s mandatory after beating a timid looking Mike Perez last year in May 2015. Ever since Povetkin locked himself in as the mandatory challenger for Wilder, boxing fans have been saying that he’s going to KO Wilder and take his WBC strap. I don’t believe that for a second. I think this is going to be one of Wilder’s easier defenses, even easier than his victory over Johann Duhaupas last year in September.

Wilder says he wants to face Povetkin in April. The negotiations are currently underway between the management of the two fighters. I’m not sure that the fight will take place as early as April, but I can definitely see it taking place in May or June.

Deontay Wilder plans on fighting Alexander Povetkin in April

1-deontay-wilder (12)By Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) says he wants to get his WBC #1 mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) out of the way so that he can get to other things. He wants to defend his title against Povetkin in April at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

This is the same venue that Wilder defended his title against last month in stopping #8 WBC Artur Szpilka in the 9th round on January 16 in a competitive fight. Wilder sees Povetkin as the same type of non-threat as Bermne Stiverne was for him last year.

Deontay Wilder – Alexander Povetkin negotiations begin

1-deontay-wilder (12)By Scott Gilfoid: The WBC ordered negotiations have begun between the promoters for WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) and #1 WBC challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) for a fight that is expected to take place between May and July of this year.

Deontay. 6’7”, is ready to get the aging 36-year-old Povetkin out of the way by beating him so that he can take on the bigger names in the division. Povetkin was already easily beaten by Wladimir Klitschko in 2013, but since then, Povetkin has beaten four softer opponents to get himself into the No.1 spot for another crack at the title.

Deontay Wilder vs. Alexander Povetkin in the works for May or June

1-wilderszpilka (4)By Scott Gilfoid: Negotiations are reportedly underway for a fight between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) and Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) for May or June of this year. Wilder vs. Povetkin is not a huge fight unfortunately, but Wilder has to get past the 36-year-old Povetkin for him to get to the bigger money fights against the likes of Tyson Fury, David Haye and Anthony Joshua.

It’ll be June at the latest. As for the location of the fight, it’ll be determined based on how the negotiations go and whether there is the need for a purse bid. If it does go to a purse bid, then the fight could wind up in Russia.

Szpilka thinks Povetkin beats Deontay Wilder

1-wilderszpilka (6)By Scott Gilfoid: The recently knocked out Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs) says he suffered a broken left hand in his 9th round knockout loss to WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) last Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It’s unclear what round the injury to Szpilka’s hand occurred, as he was still using his left hand all the way up until the end of the fight.

In fact, Szpilka was attempting to throw a wide left hook at the time that Deontay clocked him with a right to the head in round nine. The punch from Wilder knocked Szpilka unconscious for a short period. Perhaps if Szpilka didn’t attempt to throw the left hand, he would have been better off. The southpaw Szpilka was having some success using his right hand jab in the last couple of rounds until being knocked out by Wilder in the ninth.

Deontay Wilder not worried about Alexander Povetkin

wilder899(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Tim Fletcher: #1 WBC mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) was in attendance last Saturday night to watch WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s title defense against Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Wilder dispatched Szpilka in the 9th round with a mighty right hand that left the Polish fighter not moving on the canvas. Povetkin will now be the next fighter that Wilder faces unless the World Boxing Council allows the 6’7” champion to veer around the 36-year-old Povetkin to fight a unification match against either IBF champion Charles Martin or the winner of the Tyson Fury vs. Wladimir Klitschko. For the time being, it looks like Wilder will be facing Povetkin next.

Looking Forward to a New Year in Boxing

1-cotto-canelo (1)By Jonnyboy: The ever changing landscape of the boxing world has experienced serious movement in the last few months. Closing out the year, we witnessed the changing of the guard in multiple divisions with multiple champions with many new faces stepping into the limelight. With so many established names and newcomers in the mix, there’s an interesting slew of fights to look forward to in the coming year.

The question of whether or not all of these fights can be made remains unanswered, but the possibility still excites us. Here are five (possible) fights that we hope make the cut, but not the only ones that should be made:
