By Dan Ambrose: Jermall Charlo says Saul Canelo Alvarez is “on bad meat,” and he wants Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin to forget about him, because he’s not going to be able to face him in Las Vegas on May 5th. The unbeaten former IBF junior middleweight champion Charlo (26-0, 20 KOs) says Canelo “is done” because he ate bad meat, and he’s ready to step in and face Golovkin.
Charlo, 27, has a fight on April 21 against Hugo Centeno Jr. for the interim WBC middleweight title. If Canelo receives a longer suspension in the Nevada Commission’s next meeting, then Golovkin will need an opponent for his May 5th date. If Charlo can cancel his fight with Centeno, then he might be a possibility for Golovkin’s May 5th fight.
It’s not likely though. Golovkin wants to fight WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (26-0, 12 KOs) if the May 5th fight with Canelo gets canceled. However, Saunders wants Golovkin to come over to the UK to fight him, and he might not be open to the idea of fighting him in the U.S at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The problem with Golovkin getting Saunders to agree to the May 5th fight is he won’t have much time to prepare for the fight.
Saunders is training for his voluntary defense against Martin Murray (36-4-1, 17 KOs) on June 23. Saunders has a hand injury that caused him to postpone his original April 14 fight against Murray. I don’t know if Saunders is going to want to take a dangerous fight against Golovkin on May 5 if his injured hand isn’t 100 percent, and if he doesn’t have a full training camp to prepare for his fighting style.
Canelo received short two one-half week temporary suspension until April 10 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after his 2 failed tests for the substance clenbuterol for his February 17 and February 20 tests by VADA. Canelo could receive an even longer suspension by the Nevada Commission when they meet up on April 10 to decide what the next move will be.
“Canelo got caught eating bad meat,” Jermall Charlo said to Fighthype. ”You want to eat bad meat and your tis rich? That’s your fault. I’m eating good meat. Come test your boy. We’re eating good meat out here. Stop talking about GGG, because he’s not going to fight Canelo in Vegas. So what the [expletive] is he going to do? I’m the number one mandatory best in the world. If he wants to fight me, I’m the best in the world. So what are you going to do?” Charlo said.
Golovkin I going to need an opponent that can step up to the plate to fight him on the 5th of May if his fight with Canelo is canceled. The HBO Boxing executives are going to likely want Golovkin to face a quality opponent on May 5th if Canelo is suspended by the Commission in their April 10th hearing. The May 5th date is PPV on HBO, so Golovkin will need a very good opponent for him to fight. He can’t just fight anybody with him scheduled to fight on HBO PPV.
”Canelo is no more. We know what’s going on,” Charlo said. ”GGG cannot fight Canelo. The mother [expletive] is on bad meat. Canelo is on bad meat, and I’m not. If the mother [expletive] wants to fight, he better get ready. Fight me. I’m your mandatory, GGG. I’m you #1 mandatory. Canelo is eating bad meat. It’s no longer working no more. We caught up to that s—t. The mother [expletive] has been poking himself for a while now,” Charlo said.
The World Boxing Council still hasn’t ordered Golovkin to defend his WBC middleweight title against Charlo. Golovkin might choose to wait until the WBC orders the fight with Charlo before he eventually takes it. Right now, Golovkin is focused on going after the WBO title held by Saunders. That’s his goal. What Golovkin does after that is unclear. He might vacate his titles and move up to super middleweight. It depends. Golovkin can make some money by fighting the winner of the world Boxing Super Series tournament. If Golovkin stays at middleweight, he can face Canelo Alvarez again or he can deend his titles against the likes of Charlo and Danny Jacobs.
When I take off, I take off. I’m never coming back to fight no GGG,” Charlo said. Are we fighting or not? If you want to fight Canelo, then you deal with the bad meat. If you don’t want to fight Canelo, then come [expletive] with me,” Charlo said.
Golovkin will take the fight with Canelo as long as the Nevada Commission clears him to fight. There’s too much money for Golovkin to make fighting Canelo for him to turn his back on the fight if the Commission says he can go ahead and still fight on May 5th.
