Klitschko’s manager: Fury first for Wladimir, then Deontay Wilder

deontay443By Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) is going to need to wait a while before he gets a shot at capturing all of IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko’s numerous titles, because Klitschko’s manger Bernd Bonte is saying that they want Britain’s Tyson Fury first after the April 25th fight against Bryant Jennings followed by the 6’7” Wilder later on in the year.

Of course, that will require for Wladimir to beat both Jennings and Fury to get to Wilder. I mean, there’s no way that Wladimir will get the fight against Deontay if Wladimir gets blasted out by Jennings or Fury; not that I see him losing to either of those guys, but there’s always the possibility that he could lose to one of them.

After all, Wladimir is 38-years-old and all, and he’s at an age where he can be beat at all times by almost anybody if he doesn’t bring his A-game.

Wilder isn’t going to want to waste time fighting Wladimir if he gets picked off by one of those two fighters, so it’s a situation where Wladimir and Bonte’s decision to bypass Deontay could eventually cost them the fight with him if Wladimir gets picked off by someone else first.

“In a perfect world, knock on wood, that everything goes the right way on April the 25th, then we would love to do the fight against (Tyson) Fury, and then a fight against (Deontay) Wilder. It could also be the other way around, but what we heard from Al Haymon (the manager of Wilder) is that they are looking into that fight for Wilder, by the end of this year or maybe next year against Wladimir.”

Wilder doesn’t really need the Wladimir fight right now, as he’s got a ton of choices for his opposition in 2015. He can face the likes of Manuel Charr, Lucas Browne, Carlos Takam, or Alexander Povetkin. In 2016, we could see Wilder face the winner of the Povetkin vs. Mike Perez fight. That’ll be a good fight.

“Of course the fans want me to fight Tyson Fury next,” Wilder said to 8countnews.com. “I would definitely want that fight. He’s waiting for Klitschko. We’re looking to see what happens. He’s [Fury] the type of guy who does a lot of talking, but he doesn’t care if he wins or loses. I think the big issue with him is that he’s getting paid; that’s all that matters. I think that would be a good fight for us. We’re good at sell promoting. We’ve been doing it for years. No doubt in my mind he would go down.”

It is interesting that Fury isn’t in a hurry to face the hard hitting Wilder. Instead of wanting to get inside the ring with Wilder, Fury wants the Klitschko fight, even though it’ll likely make less money than the Deontay fight.

I think one of the biggest reasons why Fury wants Wladimir is because there will be a readymade excuse for Fury if he loses. If he gets beaten by Wladimir, then he can say he got beaten by the best heavyweight in the division. Because of that, boxing fans won’t dump on Fury the way they would if he gets sparked out by Deontay.
