Khan on the verge of winning Mayweather poll to get May 3rd fight

khan5655By Scott Gilfoid: With he poll ending on Sunday at Mayweather Promotions, it looks like Amir Khan has pretty much beaten Marcos Maidana to get the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Khan has a 4,000 vote lead in the poll, and it’s highly unlikely that Maidana’s fans will be able to make up the difference to vote him in today.

In reading the comments section at the site, a lot of boxing fans are saying that the poll was a scam, because the results are so dramatically different from the polls at ESPN and Fightnews that both had Maidana totally destroying Khan in lopsided votes. But Khan actually worked on getting his fans to vote for him, because he sent out twitter messages to his 1.46 million followers asking them to vote him into the fight.

So with Khan winning the poll, it means that boxing fans will likely soon be hearing an announcement from Mayweather with him telling them that he’ll be fighting the struggling Khan, and then it’ll be over 2 months of hype for a fight that will likely be over in 2 rounds at best. Mayweather rarely knocks guys out nowadays, but I suspect he’ll get score a knockout on May 3rd once he connects cleanly on Khan’s chin with a left hook or right hand.

I just hope that Golden Boy Promotions stacks the undercard with interesting fights, because the main even between Mayweather and Khan will be a disappointment.

This fight is for the casual boxing fans who don’t have a clue that Khan has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights, and hasn’t beaten a really good fighter since his win over controversial win over Marcos Maidana in 2010. I say it’s controversial only because of how the referee Joe Cortez kept pulling Maidana off of Khan in the last three rounds when he was on the verge of knocking him out. I think Khan would have been knocked out had Cortez stood behind them and let Maidana throw his punches to finish off Khan after staggering him badly in the 10th round.

Mayweather will probably have a good opponent in September with Danny Garcia possibly taking the fight if he’s feeling up to the job. If not, then we could get another weak Khan type of opponent.

Fans don’t like the idea of Khan getting the Mayweather fight because Khan was beaten by Danny Garcia in 2012 and before that Lamont Peterson.
