Will Groves’ lack of respect for Froch cost him a rematch?

froch56267By Al Hmiel: Obviously George Groves (19-1, 15 KO’s) fought a great fight against the WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch last Saturday night. Groves stunned the boxing world with his quickness and speed in beating down Froch in the first 8 rounds of their title fight in Manchester, UK. The shocking knockdown of Froch in the first round quieted the Froch fan filled arena.

Groves proved his meddle and worthiness in beating the extremely slow Froch consistently till the hasty stoppage of questionable merit by the Referee in the 9th round. Froch at 36 looked 56 the first 8 rounds.

But the question now is whether George Groves deserves a rematch or not? I’d say he probably doesn’t deserve the rematch and here is why:

Any fighter who totally disrespects his opponent (as Groves did to Froch), especially the World Champion and a legend risks the consequences of alienating himself from the courtesy of a rematch.

Groves was arrogant and cocky and disrespectful towards the Champion Froch. It is one thing to be confident in your boxing ability, but his total disrespect and a abundance of arrogance put Groves in a bad position for a possible rematch. Froch was insulted by Groves’ arrogance and disrespect that Carl felt he was due to his championship title prestige and worldwide reputation. Groves position himself verbally out of consideration for any possible rematch with Froch.

Does Groves under normal boxing conditions and history deserve a rematch? Yes. But unfortunately George’s lack of respect has cost him the rematch. Fighters who act professionally and respect the champion usually are given a rematch in a close decision. But Groves who was TKO’d and saved from a possible Knockout deserves nothing from Froch. Carl will move one to Lucian Bute and then fight Mikkel Kessler and possibly Robert Stieglitz and will let Groves flounder wondering and pondering what if?

Groves does not deserve a rematch the TKO and the disrespect of King Carl showed that.

The feelings here is that Groves probably never again fights for a meaningful title belt, and George watches and wishes he had been more respectful and acted like a professional in fighting a World champion. Bye Bye Georgie.
