chisora212By Scott Gilfoid: This Saturday night #7 WBC, #11 IBF Dereck Chisora (18-4, 12 KO’s) will be facing 29-year-old Ondrej Pala (32-3, 22 KO’s) at the Copper Box Arena, in London, United Kingdom. Pala is from the Czech Republic and he’s been stopped by Konstantin Airich, and Denis Boytsov in the past and beaten on points by German heavyweight Rene Dettweiler. Chisora will be defending his EBU heavyweight strap in this fight, which I guess explains the choice of Pala as his opponent rather than a world level fighter.

The downside of Chisora fighting another easy mark like Pala is that if Chisora looks bad or gets beaten, which is a definite possibility given his limited skills, then it would probably signal the end of Chisora’s hopes and dreams of getting another world title shot. As it is, it’s going to take Chisora ages before he becomes a mandatory for one of the Klitschko brothers.

Chisora can’t count on getting another optional title shot anymore after the way he conducted himself for the Vitali fight last year. Had Chisora taken the high road and conducted himself well in the built up to that fight, then maybe he might get a second look from one of the Klitschkos, but definitely not now.

Chisora is going to have to fight his way to a mandatory position, and for him to do that it’s going to take time and a win over a talent like Deontay Wilder, Bermane Stiverne or Chris Arreola. I don’t think Chisora can beat any of those guys, so he’s going to be out of luck eventually when he does have to face one of them to get into a mandatory position. The sanctioning bodies aren’t going to just give Chisora the mandatory spot with him beating guys like Pala, Hector Alfredo Avila, Edmund Gerber and Malik Scott.

Chisora said to BoxNation “We want to get to the top straightaway and get those world title shots next year.”

I hate to break this to Chisora, but there won’t be a world title shot in 2014. That’s not going to happen, at least not with Chisora fighting the Palas, Avilas and Gerbers of the world. Chisora is going to have to stand up and fight Arreola, Deontay, Stiverne or Kubrat Pulev if he wants to try and become the mandatory. I wouldn’t give Chisora any chance against those guys, as they can do everything Chisora can but much better.
