Andy Lee sees Froch giving Golovkin a lot of problems

froch74By Scott Gilfoid: #7 WBC, #11 WBA, middleweight contender Andy Lee chimed in about his thoughts last night about a hypothetical fight between Britain’s Carl Froch and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in the future. Lee said he thinks Froch might be too strong for the 5’10 1/2″ Golovkin. The funny part is he thinks that Golovkin and Andre Ward would be a good fight. In other words, Golovkin would have a chance to beat Ward.

Lee told Sky “I’d love to see [Gennady] fight Ward because it would be a contest of boxers and we’d see who would out-skill the other. But I think he [Gennady] would have a lesser chance against Froch because Froch is so powerful and if he stood in front of Froch he might be in danger of getting knocked out.”

I don’t agree with Lee at all. If Golovkin’s not good enough to beat Froch, then how in the world is Golovkin good enough to beat Ward? It doesn’t make sense because Ward totally schooled Froch in their fight in 2011. I think Lee has everything backwards. It’s Ward who would be too much for Golovkin, whereas Froch would be the guy that Golovkin would have a good chance of beating.

As much as I’d like to see a fight between Golovkin and Froch, I don’t see it happening. Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn recently spoke about wanting to get Golovkin over to the UK to fight Froch, and that’s probably not going to happen. If that’s part of the condition for a future Golovkin-Froch fight to take place, then it probably won’t ever happen.

Hearn has spoken in the past about wanting Ward to come over to the UK to fight Froch as well, and I don’t see that as a possibility either. If Hearn would let Froch fight Golovkin and Ward in a neutral venue in another country, then I think those guys wouldn’t mind fighting him. But having to come to the UK to fight Froch, I doubt that either will want to put themselves at such a disadvantage. Besides, Golovkin and Ward are both popular enough to fight in the U.S without needing to be dragged to another country just to bring in a large gate.

I’m wondering why Lee isn’t trying to get a fight of his own against Golovkin. I mean, Lee is a fringe contender in the middleweight division, so he should be trying to trumpet his own cause to get a fight against him. Instead of pushing for that fight, Lee said “I think I have the style to beat him [Sergio Martinez]. And then maybe after that fight I’ll fight Golovkin.”

I hate to be the one to drizzle on Lee’s parade, but he’s not going to get a fight against Sergio. That’s not going to happen before Sergio faces someone like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Miguel Cotto and gets beaten. And if Lee did get a fight against Sergio, he’d be blown out like he was against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and there wouldn’t be any point in Golovkin wasting a perfectly good title defense against Lee.

As for Froch, I don’t think he’s going to get past George Groves this month in their fight on November 23rd, so it’s almost silly to even speculate how Froch would do against Golovkin. A loss to Groves is going to take Froch’s career back to square one and Golovkin won’t waste his time trying to fight a guy that was beaten by Groves. Golovkin won’t want sloppy seconds.
