By Jack Tarpey @jackboxing24: After a promising start to his career Ian Lewison fell short at the heavyweight prize fighter tournament last February dropping a controversial decision to the American Derric Rossy after scoring a 1st round knockout against the hardened Timo Hoffman, many pundits then wrote Ian off labeling him as yet another British journeyman.

Last Saturday night Ian walked through the once promising Tom Dallas with exceptional ease using his trademark body shots to stiffen up the dangerous puncher then finishing him off with several hooks to the head, the force in which Lewison smashed Dallas with made Dallas look like a local drunk in the ring rather than a professional boxer. This fight unfortunately for Dallas has now cemented his reputation as nothing more than a punching bag.

This win can now be a platform for Lewison to stake an assault on the domestic scene with the following fighters Mcdermott, Skelton, Rogan and Towers all on his radar and of course are all winnable fights for the man who strikes to ‘Lay Em out.’

The great aspect of Ian is that he always comes to fight and whether you’re a fan or not you can’t help but be entertained by his no nonsense aggression always aiming for the stoppage, a throwback fighter compared to the safety first styles that most boxers are adapting too in this era of heavyweights.

In my opinion his main asset is his body punching which is extremely scarce to see in the heavyweight division, as he manages to put body combinations together with the same fluidity as a middle weight boxer which then quickly makes his opponents drop their guard leaving them open to be ‘laid out’ as Ian would say.

The cream of the crop from a British perspective is of course Haye, Fury, Chisora and Price who are all household names in the UK, just below the main four and on the cusp of joining the heavy UK celebrities we have Towers, Lewison, Hughie Fury and Dillian Whyte (Dillian of course is still waiting to have his licence returned after failing a drugs test.)

Add the emergence of the Olympic gold medal winner Anthony Joshua and Britain has a healthy batch of Heavy hitters to make some intriguing match ups for the near future.

The recurring problem with many British domestic heavyweights at the moment seems to be their stamina, this was evident recently in David Price the man dubbed the next Lennox Lewis after he gassed out against the ageing American Tony Thompson to lose his second contest, it was also evident in Tyson Fury’s early career most notably in his first dust up with McDermott, where according to most pundits he appeared to clearly lose that fight after running out of steam towards the end of the contest. This stamina issue seems to be Ian’s main hurdle in progressing his career as he obviously possesses a natural talent for the sport.

Whoever Ian fights next I am sure it will be entertaining and if you haven’t had the pleasure of watching him in the ring I urge you to look out for his next battle as one thing is certain Ian is always value for money.
