dirrell23134By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten super middleweight Anthony Dirrell (24-0, 21 KO’s) will be facing the capable Don Mouton (12-6-1, 6 KO’s) in a scheduled 8 round bout at the Cosmopolitan Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Dirrell, 28, hasn’t fought in over a year since his 4th round stoppage win over Renan St. Juste in a WBC super middleweight title eliminator in December, 2011. Last year in May, Dirrell suffered a broken leg and hand in a motorcycle accident.

The tragedy of all this was that Dirrell was going to be fighting for the WBC 168 lb. strap against Nikola Sjekloca in a fight that was scheduled for July. Dirrell would have mopped the deck with Sjekloca had that fight taken place and that’s just too bad because it was such an easy fight.

Dirrell doesn’t want to smash Mouton to bits on Friday because he wants to get rounds in to get some of the ring rust off. Dirrell said to mlive.com “I really want to go the distance because I want to see where I’m at. I know I’m rusty.”

The fight will be televised by Fox Sports Net/Fox Desportes. If Dirrell can stretch the fight out somehow, boxing fans will get a real treat in watching his talent. He’s got really fast hands like talented brother Andre Dirrell, but he tends to sit down on his punches much more and stand in the pocket looking to take out his opponents.

Dirrell reminds me a bigger, stronger version of Floyd Mayweather. He fights flat-footed and looks to land big pot shots and combinations, and he doesn’t it in such a calm manner. You don’t see a lot of fighters that are like that in the sport outside of Mayweather and Adrien Broner.

Dirrell is going to need to get really busy if he wants to get a title shot by 2014. He’s lost his top 15 ranking with the time that he’s been out of boxing, so he’s going to need to start fighting at least three to four times a year if he wants to get a title shot in the near future. The champions aren’t going to willingly pick out a talent like him to fight because he presents such a tough obstacle.
