By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight Deontay Wilder (28-0, 28 KO’s) liked his visit to the UK last Saturday night in destroying British heavyweight Audley Harrison by a 1st round TKO in Sheffield, UK. Deontay liked the local Brits and he says he wants to come back to the UK when/if Tyson Fury and or David Price agree to fight him in the future.
Deontay’s promoter Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions has already made the offer to Fury and Price to fight Deontay last Saturday night at the post-fight press conference, but there’s been a strange quiet from the two tall Brits ever since.
Deontay said this as quoted by Fightnews.com: “I will come back and fight Tyson Fury, as soon as they want the fight. We’ve also talked about the Price and Tony Thompson rematch, and me fighting the winner. I would love to come back.”
I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for Price and/or Fury to accept Schaefer’s offer for a Deontay fight. That just isn’t going to happen, even if Fury and Price had free dates.
Deontay breaks the mold for the types of opponents that both Fury and Price have been fighting since they turned pro. I mean, Price has fought a bunch of old ones for the past three fights against 41-year-old Audley, 45-year-old Matt Skelton and 41-year-old Tony Thompson.
Price is now fighting a rematch against Thompson after getting knocked out in the 2nd round by him. That’s pretty sad because Price had all that hype about him and then he went out and got smashed by Thompson.
I think Deontay’s about to become a victim of his own success by having the other heavyweights run from him because they don’t want to get knocked out and have their careers finished.
Deontay should have carried Audley for 8 or 9 rounds, struggled with him a little, and then I could see the other top heavyweights standing in a line outside Golden Boy’s doors looking to get a fight against the 6’7” Deontay. It’s sad that it works that way with the guys that are struggling getting all the fights, and the guys that are doing well like Deontay finding themselves unable to get top opponents.
I think Deontay may end up fighting Fury and Price someday if they don’t knocked out in their fights this year, but it won’t happen until Deontay holds one of the heavyweight straps. Once he has a title and Fury and Price are needy, they’ll take the fight with him, although the fight won’t be held in the UK once Deontay has one of the heavyweight title straps in his possession. They’ll have to come over to the U.S to fight him if they want to get a title shot.
