By Allan Fox: IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (28-1, 15 KO’s) will be looking to avenge the only loss on his resume by facing #7 IBF Anthony Mundine (44-4, 26 KO’s) next month on January 30th at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney, Australia. Geale, 31, was beaten by Mundine by a controversial 12 round split decision in May of 2009 in a fight that many boxing fans felt should have gone the other way.

Mundine has improved since then, whereas Mundine has clearly slipped a bit in terms of his talent level. Mundine is still winning his fights, but he was shockingly stopped recently by Garth Wood by a 5th round knockout in December 2010. Mundine later avenged the loss by beating Wood in a hard fought 10 round decision in April 2011. Mundine has won his last four fights beating Wood, Xavier Toliver, Rigoberto Alvarez and Bronco McKart.

Mundine was hoping he could get a big money fight against some of the big names at welterweight, but he’s not been able to get any of them to fight him. It’s not hard to see why because Mundine is basically a super middleweight that has melted down to 154 to try and lure the big money fighters into facing him.

With none of them interested, Mundine has moved up to middleweight and he’s lucked out with Geale, a fellow Australian, picking him out and giving him a title instead of having him work his way into a title shot by becoming the mandatory for the title.

Geale has been looking really good lately in beating Felix Sturm, the former WBA Super World middleweight champion, Osumani Adama, Eromosele Albert and Sebastian Sylvester in his last three fights. His win over Sturm was an excellent one as the two of them traded back and forth until Geale was able to get the better of Sturm to get the decision.
