Alvarez already told his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions that he wants one of three big names – Cotto, Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Sergio Martinez – for his next fight on May 4th next year. Alvarez even skipped a December fight date that he could have taken in order to wait around to try and land one of the three names on his list.

Right now it’s not looking good at all for Alvarez that he’ll get Mayweather or Sergio Martinez. Mayweather hasn’t said a word about who he’ll be fighting or win he’ll be fighting again. But Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer is working on putting a deal together between WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero and Mayweather, so that leaves Alvarez out of the loop. And Sergio Martinez is coming off of knee surgery, and he’s expected to fight in Argentina in April against possibly middleweight contender Martin Murray in what will be more of a stay busy fight for Martinez.

It’s looking like the only option that Alvarez has right now is to try and land a fight against the winner – or loser – of the Cotto-Trout fight. Alvarez would will doing well if he can get Cotto, because he’s definitely one of the biggest names in boxing right now. However, there’s no telling if Cotto will get past Trout because this is a really tough fight for Cotto and he could lose. And even if Cotto wins it’s unclear whether he’ll agree to fight Alvarez.

As for Trout, you can bet he’ll jump at the chance to fight Alvarez if the fight is available to him. Trout already easily beat Saul Alvarez’s older brother Rigoberto Alvarez last year in February by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in a fight for the vacant World Boxing Association 154 lb title. By facing Trout, Canelo can avenge his brother’s defeat. Of course, Canelo can also lose to Trout, and that would give Trout two big wins, one against Cotto and another against Canelo, that would make Trout a star.
