Image: Schaefer: Mayweather expected to pick from Cotto, Alvarez or Guerrero for next opponentBy Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN that Floyd Mayweather Jr. will likely be selecting his next opponent from the following three fighters: Miguel Cotto, Robert Guerrero and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. However, Schaefer thinks that Guerrero is the one that will get the pick by Mayweather for his next fight.

It’s interesting that Cotto is still in the running for a fight with Mayweather because he already fought Mayweather last May and was beaten by a 12 round decision. It was thought that Mayweather would then move on.

Guerrero is an appealing option because he brings in a lot of Mexican fans, and that would make for big pay per view numbers. Guerrero is more Mayweather’s size than say Canelo Alvarez, who is more like a middleweight and that would be tough for Mayweather to fight someone as heavy as him. It’s an easy option to fight Guerrero because he doesn’t have the speed or the power to give Mayweather a lot of problems.

Alvarez really wants the Mayweather fight, but he’s still not the huge draw that he’ll be later on after he’s established himself as a star in the U.S. Alvarez hasn’t been helped that Golden Boy has been matching him against light welterweights, welterweights and older fighters for the past couple of years instead of top guys like Erislandy Lara, James Kirkland and Vanes Martirosyan. Mayweather really should wait until Alvarez finally fights some top fighters from the junior middleweight division and proves that he can beat them before he chooses to fight him.

Cotto would be a good choice for Mayweather but Cotto has to get past WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout this Saturday night to keep him as a viable option. If Cotto gets beat then he can forget about a future rematch with Mayweather.
