Roy Jones Jr. to fight 38-year-old Kimbo Slice in exhibition bout in December

By Dan Ambrose: 43-year-old former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (56-8, 40 KO’s) will reportedly be facing 38-year-old unbeaten Kevin Ferguson (5-0, 4 KO’s) in December in an exhibition fight in Montego Bay, Jamaica. This is a mismatch if I ever saw one. Slice looks hopelessly lost in the ring since turning pro, and he’s looked poor against 3rd tier opposition that he’s been facing. He’s looked really poor to the extreme.

It doesn’t matter that Jones Jr. is totally shot as a fighter and would be giving away a lot of size to the 240 pound Slice, this is still a mismatch because Slice is painfully slow and he fades quickly after one round when he fights. Jones wouldn’t have to worry about much coming back from Slice once he’s got him past the 1st round and it’ll turn into a route by the 3rd if Slice is stills standing.

A fight between Jones and Slice would likely have huge gloves used instead of puncher’s gloves, especially with it being an exhibition bout. They’re not going to use punchers’ gloves for a fight between Jones and Slice. It’s not going to happen.

Slice has beaten the following five opponents since turning pro last year:

James Wade (0-1)
Tay Bledsoe (2-4, 2 KO’s)
Charles Hackmann (0-1)
Brian Green (0-0)
Jesse Porter (3-5, 3 KO’s)

As you can see these are all 3rd tier opponents that Slice has been fighting and he’s looked dreadful in every fight he’s taken part in at the pro level.

The big question is why is Jones Jr. continuing to fight? Didn’t he make a lot of money during his career? Why subject to all these fights this late in his career. He’s 43 now and he’s not fighting at a high level anymore.
