If Cotto did that, it would be the equivalent of a catchweight because Cotto doesn’t fight at 147 lbs anymore and if he were to have to fight at that weight the chances would be high that he would end up weight drained.

With the Pacquiao rematch looking like it’s not going to happen, Cotto is going to have to try and get the best possible opponent for his December 1st scheduled fight in Madison Square Garden in New York. The reason why it’s so important for Cotto to get the biggest name possible is because the chances are better than average that Cotto will lose if he fights someone good like Floyd Mayweather Jr. or WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez. If Cotto is going to get beaten, which I think he will, he needs to at least get the biggest payday possible in getting beat.

Right now, Pacquiao, Alvarez and Mayweather are the three fighters that Cotto has in his sights. These names could quickly disappear reason soon if Pacquiao chooses Juan Manuel Marquez or Tim Bradley to fight on November 10th, and Mayweather decides either to not fight at all for the remainder of the year or he goes after someone like Alvarez instead of Cotto again. There’s a possibility that Cotto could end up fighting Alvarez, because the 22-year-old has been upfront about wanting to fight Cotto or Mayweather next after Alvarez faces Josesito Lopez on September 15th.

For Cotto, he should try his best to get the Mayweather and Pacquiao rematches, because a fight against Alvarez will be a big step down from those two fights in terms of pay per view buy potential. It’s also better if Cotto faces Mayweather and Pacquiao, because losing to them won’t hurt Cotto’s career nearly as much as it would be if he got beaten by the young Alvarez.
