Image: Guerrero moves up two weight divisions to face AydinBy Allan Fox: Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) wants a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr, and is willing to do almost anything to get that fight, including moving up two weight divisions on July 28th to fight unbeaten welterweight contender Selcuk Aydin (23-0, 17 KO’s) at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

Guerrero, 29, has recently been fighting at lightweight after moving up from super featherweight in April of 2010. Guerrero has had only four fights at lightweight, and won all of them. Instead of moving up slowly one weight division at a time, Guerrero has decided to take a big risk and jump two weight divisions to try and get a fight against Mayweather quicker.

The thing is even if Guerrero does beat Aydin on July 28th, the chances aren’t very good that Mayweather Jr. will choose to fight him. And if Guerrero is counting on the World Boxing Council forcing Mayweather Jr. to defend his WBC title against Guerrero, I think he’s going to be sadly mistaken.

I can’t see the WBC forcing Mayweather to take that fight, and if they do, he’ll likely vacate. It’s not that Mayweather Jr. is afraid of fighting Guerrero, it’s that there’s no upside to facing an obscure fighter without a huge fan base like Guerrero. So Guerrero is probably wasting his time by moving up so quickly, because it’s not a smart move on his part.

Aydin, 28, has excellent power in the Marcos Maidana type mold. He’s the same kind of fighter and is vulnerable to being out-boxed like Maidanda would be. But he’s also someone that will inflict a lot of punishment along the way, so this isn’t going to be a free ride for Guerrero. At featherweight and super featherweight, Guerrero was often the bigger puncher compared to his opponents, but it won’t be the case against Aydin. Guerrero will have to settle for being the lighter puncher, and hopefully he doesn’t try and slug with him.
