The reason for this was that Roach’s #1 fighter Manny Pacquiao’s training camps have coincided with Khan’s, meaning that either Pacquiao would come to train where Khan is or Khan would come where Pacquiao is training. With Pacquiao being the more popular fighter, it was always Khan who had to jump through hoops in order to get the training time he needed with Roach and that meant flying to the Philippines.

Khan said to ESPN: “Sometimes a lot of traveling is not going to be good for you. I have traveled to the Philippines and back.”

Khan is correct. A lot of fighters wouldn’t have put up with that for a second, because it’s not really a workable situation if Khan having to go through the severe hassles of flying all the way to the Philippines just so that he can be with his trainer and work around the training schedule of Pacquiao. That’s silly, and it’s surprising that Khan put up with it as long as he did.

Khan still fought a poor fight in his loss to WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last Saturday night, and it’s definitely his fault for not heeding the advice of his trainer Roach in boxing Garcia instead of slugging with him. However, Khan shouldn’t have to go through great lengths just to get training time with Roach. That’s not right, and perhaps Khan should seriously consider parting ways to find a more available trainer that will be there for him, and who can focus on working on his defensive flaws. At this point it might be better for Khan to simply cut ties with Roach and consider it a failed experiment before he puts in any more wasted time. The relationship isn’t working the way Khan planned obviously, as he’s now lost his last two fights.
