Image: Maidana wants Canelo Alvarez in SeptemberBy Eric Thomas: Marcos Maidana (31-3, 28 KO’s) says he’s interested in moving up in weight two divisions to face unbeaten WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (40-0, 29 KO’s) on September 15th in a Showtime televised pay-per-view bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Maidana said on his twitter “Canelo likes wars just like me. I like to fight Canelo. I have faith that I’d knock him out. Canelo alvarez it’s who I want. I’m asked if I’d fight Matthysse. I’ve always said I wouldn’t like it ’cause he’s my fellow countryman but if we have to, I’d face him.”

Maidana may have to settle for facing Lucas Matthysse rather than getting a fight against Canelo Alvarez, because Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer already mentioned last night that he’s interested in matching Maidana against Matthysse if Maidana can get past Keith Thurman next month on July 21st in their 10 round bout in Cincinnati.

You can’t blame Schaefer for wanting to match Maidana against Matthysse rather than Alvarez, because Maidana was recently beaten badly when he tried moving up in weight to the welterweight division last February in his loss to Devon Alexander. Having Maidana move up yet another division at 154 would be asking way too much of him, and it would likely result in a bad fight.

Golden Boy Promotions is more interested in putting on competitive fights rather than mismatches, and a Maidana-Alvarez bout would almost surely be a terrible mismatch due to Alvarez’s bigger size and better boxing skills compared to Maidana.
