Froch: Where does he go from here?

Image: Froch: Where does he go from here?By Chris Beale: I will start by saying I’m a fan of IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s). He is a true fighter, hard as nails and can give it out too. Unlike a lot of fighters in his division, Froch will actually stand there and trade with you, and he has proven time and time again he can take it.

But Despite him destroying IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute, and regaining a world Title, Froch is limited in where he can go from here.

He could take on Bute again if Bute demands a rematch. However, I don’t see this being advantageous to Froch OR Bute. Unlike other authors on this site, I don’t see the result changing and the ridiculous allegations that he should have been disqualified aside, you cant make an argument for Bute ever being skilled enough for the result to end differently.

The best option to me seems to be a rematch with Mikkel Kessler. This would sell and last time it was a close war with both sides being able to make arguments that they won. I see a rematch in Nottingham being good for Carl. He gets to silence those demons and he will likely win. A close fight is more likely to go in his favour in his hometown.

Some have spoke of a rematch between Froch and WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward. I also think this would be an interesting fight. Froch has less to lose this time. Ward Dominated him last time but never really hurt Froch, and you always got the sense that one good punch and Ward would have been in trouble. Fact is Froch has a better punch than Ward and if he would improve his speed and skills, he could be the biggest threat to Ward.

Another option would be one of the Dirrell Brothers, but I think this would be a waste of time. Unlike some writers on this site, I see the Dirrell brothers like I Deonotay Wilder – untested and/or unconvincing against Championship level boxers. Andre Dirrell has beaten only one big named opponent in Arthur Abraham because Dirrell took advantage of Abraham’s choosing to foul him when Dirrell slipped on the canvas. Froch has already beaten Abraham.

Another option would be for Froch to move up in weight. The Light-heavyweight division is a pretty wide open field and the competition at that weight is not as good as at Super-Middleweight. Froch has certainly got the ability to take heavy punches so he wouldn’t struggle from that perspective and he certainly has the power to handle most at that weight.

There is another option, although I think it would be the wrong one is for him to retire. This would be silly as Froch can still sell and still leaves a lot of questions on peoples minds.
