Cotto doesn’t have the tools to beat Mayweather

Image: Cotto doesn't have the tools to beat MayweatherBy Dan Ambrose: It’s really too bad that WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 KO’s) didn’t agree to drain himself down to 147 to give Manny Pacquiao an advantage in order to get a fight with him, because that was at least a fight that Cotto could compete.

Sure, Cotto would likely be too weak from having to drain down to make the fight, but he’d at least have been able to give Pacquiao some problems and maybe mess up his face or ear again. However, Cotto is now signed to fight unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 25 KO’s) on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and I don’t like this match-up at all for Cotto.

This is like putting Eloy Perez in with Adrien Broner last Saturday night. Cotto is going to get picked apart by the quick counter punches from Mayweather. The Cotto-Mayweather fight is a little different than the Perez-Broner bout because Broner was the bigger puncher and bigger fighter in that bout. Mayweather isn’t the bigger fighter or the bigger puncher. He may be a little taller than the 5’7″ Cotto at 5’8″, but he isn’t taller than him.

Cotto will likely outweigh Mayweather by 5-10 pounds, but won’t matter. Mayweather will pick Cotto apart using his speed and counter punching ability. Cotto is really the perfect guy for Mayweather to fight because he likes to take big swings and has kind of limited boxing skills. Cotto does the same thing over and over again with his jab, 1-2 combination followed by a reverse retreat going straight back. Mayweather is someone that picks up things up quickly and doesn’t need a trainer like Freddie Roach to tell him what time it is. He sees Cotto for all his flaws, and knows this going to be an easy fight for him. Cotto is going to get a lot more than he has been getting in the last three years due to his promoter Bob Arum’s soft matchmaking.
