Andre Ward: I’m NOT giving up my WBC belt; I’m out to get ALL of them

Image: Andre Ward: I'm NOT giving up my WBC belt; I'm out to get ALL of themBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KO’s) dismissed any thoughts of him dumping his World Boxing Council strap and says he’s out to get the last two remaining titles – IBF & WBO – to add to his growing collection.

Ward, who’ll be turning 28 on Thursday, said this about speculation floating around about him giving up his WBC title on his twitter account, saying “Don’t believe the rumors about me giving up my WBC belt. I’m on a mission to get them all!! All the speculation about what’s next keeps me fired up!! Time to hit it!”

This is really good news, because I was hoping that Ward wouldn’t give up the WBC title. I mean, that’s one that he earned recently by spanking Carl Froch in the Super Six tournament last December. Ward can’t give up that title because it’s like a scalp. He went out there and avenged Andre Dirrell’s controversial loss and brought the WBC title back to America. That was like watching the Olympics. I priceless television.

Well, I guess Froch probably isn’t too happy about this news because he could have gone for the vacant WBC title if his hoped for fight against IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute didn’t pan out the way he hoped it would. Froch would have been able to take on #1 WBC contender Anthony Dirrell (24-0, 21 KO’s) for the vacant WBC belt and would have a chance in theory to recapture his WBC title. I think Froch would have been easily beaten but who knows? If Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn were able to get the Froch-Dirrell fight in Nottingham, Froch might have been able to win another highly controversial decisions like he got against Anthony’s brother Andre Dirrell in October 2009. Now that option has been yanked away by the reality of Ward saying he’s not giving up his WBC title.

Ward still isn’t saying who he’ll fight next, but it appears he may choose to milk the title for his first defense rather than go after the highly dangerous Anthony Dirrell. Ward hasn’t said who he’ll be facing but he’s beaten pretty much all the good fighters in the division accept for the Dirrell brothers and Bute. The only guys left are Adonis Stevenson, Edwin Rodriguez, Tommy Oothuizen, Kelly Pavlik, James DeGale, George Groves, and Piotr Wilczewski. I can’t see any of those fighters agreeing to get in the ring with a talent like Ward because he would whip them too badly. It would be too easy. I’d like to see Ward fight Stevenson and Pavlik next, but that’s a pipe dream because those guy’s promoters won’t likely let their fighters get beaten by Ward.
