Image: Vanes Martirosyan vs. 41-year-old Lowry on Chavez-Rubio undercard on February 4thBy Dan Ambrose: The February 4th Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Marco Antonio Rubio fight got a pretty much useless undercard fight added to it on Friday night with the addition of unbeaten junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (31-0, 19 KO’s) facing 41-year-old journeyman Troy Lowry (28-11, 17 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

This fight is a complete and utter mismatch. Lowry has lost five of his last six fights and a whole lot more besides those ones. Martirosyan, 25, seems like the perfect Chavez Jr. like clone in the way he’s fought his entire seven-year pro career against B and C level opposition.

You hear Martirosyan calling out champions like WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez and WBA champ Miguel Cotto, and then he wonders why he’s ignored by them. Martirosyan is likely being ignored because he’s done zero to raise his profile in the sport by not facing top tier fighters.

Martirosyan is facing journeyman level opposition and then complaining why he’s not getting a title shot. Martirosyan is ranked high at #1 WBC #4 WBO, yet the guy won’t fight anyone with any halfway decent talent. He’s taking the Chavez Jr. approach to working his way up to a title shot by facing B and in the case of Lowry, C level opposition to get his title shot.

Sure, he’s going to stay unbeaten that way and eventually get his title shot but he’s not going to name for himself other a fighter who his handlers aren’t putting him in with quality opposition. It makes you wonder whether they see something in Martirosyan that is making them wary of putting him in against top tier opposition. Perhaps he’s getting knocked around in sparring sessions and they won’t want to see him get beat before he gets his payday fight against Alvarez.

But you got to figure facing C level opposition like this after seven years in the professional ranks has to have a stunting effect on Martirosyan’s career. Who would really want to see Martirosyan fight for a title against the likes of Alvarez or Cotto based on the guys that Martirosyan has fought his entire career? I know I wouldn’t. I don’t think he deserves a shot. And this mismatch between him and Lowry deserves to be on ESPN2, not on HBO. The sad thing is the fight will likely make it on the air.
