Image: Mundine interested in Geale rematchBy Jim Dower: Former two-time WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (43-4, 25 KO’s) says he wouldn’t mind getting back in the ring and fighting a rematch against IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (26-1, 15 KO’s), who the 36-year-old Mundine beat in May 2009 by a controversial 12 round split decision.

The two haven’t fought since but Geale, 30, wouldn’t mind avenging his loss to Mundine. The only problem with them fighting now is that Mundine isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies in the middleweight division and instead of highly ranked at junior middleweight. That, of course, wouldn’t likely prevent Geale from fighting Mundine if he wanted to, as we see that kind of thing a lot unfortunately in boxing.

Mundine told mercury.com.au “I believe I beat him [Geale] the first time and I’ll beat him again.”

Geale will be fighting his mandatory challenger Osumana Adama (20-2, 15 KO’s) on March 7th at the Derwent Entertaiment Centre, in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. This will be Geale’s second title defense of his International Boxing Federation belt he won against Sebastian Sylvester in May 2011.

Geale has defended the title once since then, beating 37-year-old Eromosele Albert (24-6-1, 12 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision last August. Adama, 31, stopped former IBF light middleweight champion Roman Karmazin by a 9th round TKO in the IBF middleweight title eliminator bout last October.

Mundine is expected to be back in action in March in a fight that will take place in the United States. This will be the first time in Mundine’s 12-year pro career that he will have fought in the United States. Mundine has stayed at home in Australia pretty much his entire career except for some fights in New Zealand, for one fight in Canada and another in Germany early in his career. Mundine recently defeated Rigoberto Alvarez by a 12 round unanimous decision last October to capture the interim WBA World light middleweight title.
