Image: Arthur Abraham wants to capture a world title in 2012 at middleweightBy Dan Ambrose: Arthur Abraham (32-3, 26 KO’s) is about as down as a fighter can be after losing three out of his last four fights in since 2010. Abrabam’s only win in the past two years was against Stjepan Bozic in February last year. The losses for Abraham came in the Super Six tournament against quality fighters.

However, it was his bad idea to move up to the super middleweight division after having a hard time controlling his diet to keep his weight down for him to stay middleweight. Abraham, who held the IBF middleweight title from 2005 to 2009, ate his way out of the middleweight and thought things would be easier at middleweight. They weren’t and he’s now reversed course and is going to be moving back down in weight soon.

He’s got one more fight at super middleweight on January 14th against super middleweight contender Pablo Natalio Farias (19-1, 11 KO’s) and then Abraham is supposed to be moving back down. Hopefully Abraham doesn’t get things twisted in his head that he’s meant to be a super middleweight if he beats this guy, because Farias is nothing special, even though the World Boxing Council has him ranked at #11. That’s way, way, way too high for that guy. He’s more like a bottom 80 fighter. But it’s hard to understand any of the rankings by the WBC, so this is kind of par for the course.

Abraham told fightnews.com that his goal for 2012 is to capture a world title. It sounds nice but the only champion that will likely give him an immediate fight is WBA World middleweight champion Felix Sturm, who is also based out of Germany like Abraham. A fight between him and Abraham would be big in Germany, and I can see Sturm going for that fight because Abraham doesn’t look like the same fighter he once was. In the Super Six tournament, Abraham seemed capable of only fighting hard or 15 seconds per round. He covered up and tried to block shots until the ends of the rounds, when he then would attack with wild haymakers.

It didn’t work out well, and he lost three of the four fights h took part in the tournament. Abraham recognizes what he did wrong in those fights and promises that he’ll be much more active in his fights in 2012 by throwing more punches. It’s hard to believe that because if Abraham would have done that in those fights if he was physically able. He just doesn’t have the stamina to fight harder than a handful of seconds without tiring out. Abraham was fighting like this in the last year at middleweight, so it’s not just something that suddenly appeared after he moved up in weight.
