Burns says he’ll be stronger for Katsidis bout

By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns (32-2, 9 KO’s) thinks he’ll be a stronger fighter now that he’s moving up five pounds from the super featherweight division to take on Michael Katsidis (28-4, 23 KO’s) for the interim WBO lightweight title on November 5th at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, London.

I think Burns has a pipe dream. He’s not going to be anymore powerful than he was at super featherweight. It’s all in his mind. He thinks he’ll be stronger but he’s dreaming.

Burns told sportinglife.com “I think people are going to see a lot stronger Ricky Burns on November 5. Moving up an extra five pounds is a big difference. I’m just so much happier now in boxing.”

Burns has never been a puncher and he must be kidding himself if he thinks he’s going to have more power by coming in five pounds heavier.

The power won’t be enough for the light hitting Burns to be able to stand in front of the powerful Katsidis all night. But it’s a good thing for Katsidis that Burns has fooled himself into thinking he’s got more power, because he’ll likely choose to stand and fight Katsidis on November 5th instead of running like he should be thinking of doing.

If Burns is going to win this fight it’s not going to be by slugging with Katsidis. That’s a sure fire way for Burns to get whipped if he tries to trade with the Australian.

The only way Burns can win is if he boxes and moves all night long, and then gets a couple of the judges to be impressed with that kind of thing.

What’s really sad is that Burns has been matched so softly for the past year since beating Roman Martinez by a 12 round decision last year in September.

Burns has beaten three soft opponents since then and finally facing someone halfway decent in Katsidis. Burns just moved up in weight when he was on the verge of facing someone really good in Adrien Broner.

When the fight was staring at him suddenly it was time for Burns to move up in weight.

I see Katsidis taking the fight to Burns and hurting him with left hooks to the head and body. Burns isn’t prepared to compete with a slugger like Katsidis, so this should get ugly real soon in this fight. I just hope Burns doesn’t turn his back on Katsidis when the going gets tough like Kevin Mitchell did.
