Image: 40-year-old Rogan vs. 44-year-old Skelton on November 12thBy William Mackay: 40-year-old Martin Rogan (14-2, 7 KO’s), the heavyweight that Tyson Fury so badly wanted to fight, is taking on 44-year-old Matt Skelton (25-6, 20 KO’s) on November 12th at the Kings Hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

It’s a fight that isn’t particularly interesting given the advanced age of the two fighters and their lack of impressive performances in the past few years. Skelton has a two fight win streak going for him with wins over Ali Adams and Kevin McBride, but that’s not a lot to get excited about.

Rogan, 30, has lost two out of his last four fights. He has won his last two bouts against 3rd tier heavyweights Yavor Marinchey (5-20) and Werner Kreiskott (8-14), but those are just stay record padding fights for Rogan. What seems to be disappointing is Rogan turning down a fight with Fury. Why Rogan would turn a fight down with Fury to take on Skelton is beyond me. But whatever the case, it probably doesn’t matter because Rogan had little chance of beating Fury. He looked terrible in losing two fights to Sam Sexton in 2009, and he hasn’t helped himself by not next to nothing since then.

If this was a younger version of Skelton instead of the 44-year-old version, I’d pick him to easily beat Rogan. However, Skelton is slow now and lacks the punching power and the stamina to be able to beat a guy like Rogan, not that Rogan is all that good. He’s a 2nd tier fighter all the way. If Skelton can find the form he had in his Paolo Vidoz in 2008, he could win this fight. Skelton was beaten by Rogan two years ago in an 11th round TKO loss. Rogan is not the same fighter he was then, so maybe Skelton has a chance. Either way, it’s not going to be pretty watching these two fighters go it.
