Price defeated Matt Skelton (28-7, 23 KO’s) tonight by a 2nd round TKO in Liverpool, England. Maloney wants to match Price up in February against an American heavyweight contender rumored to be 41-year-old Tony Thompson. Following that fight, Maloney wants to match Price against either Derek Chisora or Tyson Fury, depending on which fighter he can get to agree to face Price.

Fury is the first choice but he’s also the much harder one because he wants to fight for a world title against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and he doesn’t want to risk losing that chance by taking a fight that would have some risk involved like a fight against Price certainly would.

Maloney said to Sky Sports News “We made Tyson Fury an offer last time that we had no response to. We’re prepared to put £650,000 into an account on Monday morning, which is £150,000 more than we offered him last time. He won’t earn that sort of money for fighting a Klitschko. You get half a million dollars and half of your TV rights.”

Fury wants the title from Wladimir because it would give him four belts at once, and it no doubt would lead to a much bigger payday in a rematch with Wladimir. It makes sense to fight Wladimir because the upside is much bigger than it would be in a fight against Price. If Fury beats Price, he only wins the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles. Those are two belts that Fury previously had and vacated in the past year. He’s not going to want to take his career backwards just for a little more money.
