Mitchell: I’ll give Murray a rematch after I’m World champion in a year

By Scott Gilfoid: Showing what a good one he is, World Boxing Organization (WBO) Inter-Continental lightweight champion Kevin Mitchell (32-1, 24 KO’s) promised to give the defeated John Murray (31-1, 18 KO’s) a rematch next year after Mitchell picks up a world title. Heck, Mitchell might as well have told Murray that he would fight him again after the Dodo bird comes back from extinction because it’s not happening.

Mitchell, if he does fight WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios, he’s going to get destroyed. There’s no two ways about it. Mitchell doesn’t have a prayer against Rios, even if he gets the fight. WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto is moving up in weight to light welterweight, and Juan Manuel Marquez is moving up as well, but I don’t see Mitchell beating any of the contenders to pick up portions of those belts.

And I can’t see Mitchell ever beating IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez. So basically, Mitchell is promising Murray something he can’t give him. It’s a nice gesture but unless Mitchell is able to take on someone really, really beatable for a portion of one of the titles, I can’t see him becoming a champion. As you know, most of the sanctioning bodies now have two champions in many of the divisions – a regular champion and a Super champion. With all those extra titles on the line, it’s like there’s 8 world titles for each division. It’s kind of pathetic when you think about it, but I still don’t see Mitchell being good enough to pick up one of those belts.

Mitchell said this to Murray at frankwarren.tv: “John [Murray] turned down the chance of a world title fight to meet me instead. He’s a true gentleman and we’re good mates. I’ll return his generosity by giving him a rematch in a year or so. By then I will be a world champion, and the fight will be even bigger. He was good to me and I’ll keep my promise to him.”

Oh, it’s so sad. Mitchell sounds like he’s dreaming. Someone needs to wake him up because none of this is reality based.
