Kevin Mitchell wants Katsidis rematch

By Scott Gilfoid: Fresh off his impressive 8th round knockout of domestic fighter John Murray (31-1, 18 KO’s) last night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England, Kevin Mitchell (32-1, 24 KO’s) is now targeting Australian fringe lightweight contender Michael Katsidis for a rematch. It was only last year that Katsidis blew Mitchell out with a third round knockout in somewhat of an upset victory.

It sounds good that Mitchell wants the rematch, but unfortunately he has little to offer Katsidis. He’s already in line for a title fight against World Boxing Association lightweight champion Brandon Rios, and that fight you would think would be the much bigger bout than to take on a guy that he already beat and who doesn’t have a title. It’s a no-brainer. Mitchell has nothing to offer other than some obscure WBO inter-continental strap, and I’m pretty sure that Katsidis can survive life without going after that belt.

Mitchell said this at frankwarren.tv: “That’s the fight I want [Katsidis]. I want redemption after what happened to me last year. I wasn’t right and I’d love a second chance. I’m sure Frank Warren can get Katsidis back over here. I’ve thought about nothing but beating him since I lost at Upton Park…Katsidis is the perfect fight.”

Well, this would be the perfect time for Mitchell to fight Katsidis. After all, Katsidis has lost his last two fights to Juan Manuel Marquez and Roberto Guerrero. Of course, those guys are so much better than Mitchell that it’s not even funny. There’s no comparison. Mitchell is way below those guys in talent. I think Katsidis would destroy Mitchell again. He’s a much different animal than the painfully slow Murray.

Katsidis has speed and is powerful. If jumps on Mitchell the way he did last time, the fight will end quickly. Mitchell turned his back on Katsidis last time and was cowering on the ropes when the fight was halted. It doesn’t matter if Mitchell hits and runs all night long, Katisids will still catch up to him at some point and trap him on the ropes like he did last time and destroy him. Mitchell was often tagged by the slow Murray last night while on the ropes. For Katsidis, it will probably only take one or two times before he knocks Mitchell out.

At any rate, this is neither here nor there. Katsidis has a much better fight against Rios and that is leagues better than facing a domestic level fighter like Mitchell and beating him up again. Unless they want to pay Katsidis huge money for this fight, he’s probably go for the better deal against Rios. I know I would. Mitchell is a backwards move for Katsidis and a waste of time. I’d much prefer to see Mitchell fight Breidis Prescott again. He’s improved a lot since Mitchell beat him and I think it would be interesting to see if Mitchell can do his hit and run against Prescott.
