McCrory: Hatton couldn’t come back

By Sean McDaniel: We may have seen the last of Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO’s) after he recently retired from boxing with only two career losses on his record. Sky Sports News analyst Glen McCrory doesn’t think Hatton can come back from retirement, saying at Sky Sports “It’s caught up with him now in his retirement and it’s such a hard road of any fighter to get back. For Ricky, who hasn’t lived the best and has enjoyed life, he couldn’t do it.”

Indeed, it would be nearly impossible for Hatton to make a comeback right now even if his mind was totally 100% committed to it. Hatton has put on too much weight and lived the good life with food and drink since being knocked cold by Manny Pacquiao in a 2nd round knockout in 2009.

Just taking off the weight would be hard enough for Hatton, but with the years of inactivity and his unhealthy lifestyle with the drink, it would make it very difficult for Hatton to be competitive against the young lions in the light welterweight division like Timothy Bradley, Lucas Matthysse, Roberto Guerrero, Devon Alexander and Marcos Maidana.

Could Hatton get back down to 140 lbs to fight at his old weight at light welterweight? I doubt it. Hatton might be able to get back down in weight but he would probably look and feel pretty well drained. That in turn would hurt him against the better fighters. That’s not to say that Hatton wouldn’t make a bundle, especially if he were to fight someone like Amir Khan. But it would hard for Hatton to beat the better fighters in the division if the fight made it past the 5th round.
