What will Donaire do when Montiel starts throwing bombs?

By Chris Williams: Former three time world champion Fernando Montiel (43-2-2, 33 KO’s) goes into his February 19th bout against former IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KO’s) with a huge power advantage for their fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Donaire, 28, has decent power of his own, but not the one punch power that Montiel has going for him. Donaire is the type that needs to land a lot of shots to get his opponents out of there.

Doniare also the type of fighter that doesn’t like to get hit, and seems to flee from the action when he starts tasting power shots from his opponents. Donaire does have a nice left hook that he likes to try and land when running away or standing his ground. It’s basically Donaire’s last line of defense before he starts in the full back-pedaling away from the action. It works against fighter like Vic Darchinyan, who was failed to ready himself for this weapon by keeping his right hard high to pick it off.

Donaire’s lefts can be blocked and countered with lefts to the head. This is what Montiel will be doing all night long on February 19th or as long as the fight lasts. Donaire hasn’t been in with anyone with the kind of power that Montiel has. The closest that Donaire came to fighting anyone like Montiel was Rafael Concepcion, who put a serious whipping on Donaire for most of their fight in 2009, causing Donaire to run like the dickens. Concepcion easily picked off Donaire’s left hooks right his right hands and completely nullified this weapon.

With his left hand basically ineffective against Concepcion, Donaire was left with only his harmless right hand, which isn’t nearly as much of a weapon as his left. Concepcion has his way with Donaire, and spent the 2nd half of the fight chasing Donaire around the ring and battering him with hard shots every time he caught up to him. Montiel destroyed the same Concepcion in an easy 3rd round knockout last year in July.
