By Dan Ambrose: Promoter Don King believes that his fighter Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO’s) has the talent to pull off an upset over World Boxing Association (WBA) junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) on March 12th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Once Cotto is out of the way, King wants to match Mayorga up against another one of Bob Arum’s fighters, Manny Pacquiao.

It would be a huge fight, because Arum will have already had his #2 cash cow fighter Cotto knocked off and spoiled by Mayorga, so it would be up to Arum’s #1 cash cow Pacquiao to right things. King and Mayorga would do incredibly well win or lose. Just look at Shane Mosley. He’s going to make out like a fat rat whether he gets destroyed or not against Pacquiao in this fight on May 7th, and will easily walk away with a minimum of $7 million for his beating.

King told Dan Rafael of ESPN, “It’s going to be something exciting and a thrill for me to give Bob [Arum] one when Mayorga beats his man. He deserves it. Bob’s been working hard. A little punch in Bob’s kidney wouldn’t hurt. He still has Manny Pacquiao, though, and that’s who we are after. Bob staid he can’t speak for Pacquiao, but when we get through with Cotto, that’s who we want. That’s why Mayorga took this fight, because he wants Cotto and then get a shot at Pacquiao. He gave himself a tough task. Should he overcome this, the reward would be going after Pacquiao. So we’re going to try to put a little spark into Bob’s life.”

Yes, a win for Mayorga over Cotto would be a huge blow to Arum and would very likely serve as a springboard for a fight against Pacquiao. Mayorga will be impossible to ignore once he beats Cotto and takes away the future match-up between him and Pacquiao that Arum has been eyeing ever since their previous fight in 2009.
