Image: Cotto thinks he would beat Pacquiao in a rematch: Who would want to see that fight?By Chris Williams: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) would like to get a second stab at Manny Pacquiao in the future, and likes his chances in rematch with him. Cotto previously fought Pacquiao in November 2009, and was completely out-gunned and slowly and methodically beaten to a pulp. The fight stopped being interesting after the first round when Cotto started running just to survive.

Cotto was knocked down a couple of times and ran for his life until the 12th round when he attempted to exchange with Pacquiao briefly. The fight was quickly stopped, when Pacquiao took the opportunity to rip Cotto apart with combinations. Cotto has since moved up in weight since that defeat and recently picked up the WBA paper title by beating one of his Top Rank stablemates Yuri Foreman last year in a 9th round TKO.

The title means little, as far as I’m concerned, because it didn’t come against the best fighters in the weight class such as Paul Williams, Sergio Martinez, Alfredo Angulo or Sergeii Dzinziruk. I saw very little in Cotto’s win over Foreman that would suggest that Cotto would do any better against Pacquiao in a remathc, and I’m really hoping that Bob Arum doesn’t serve this up to the boxing public. I might be interested in a rematch if it were to take place years from now if Pacquiao was still around and Cotto had won all of his fights. But not now. He looks really vulnerable and I can’t see him winning for long unless he’s really spoon fed weak opposition. Arum is matching him up against 37-year-old Ricardo Mayorga on March 12th, but as bad as Cotto looks now, I’m giving Mayorga a halfway decent chance of beating Cotto up and taking him out.

In an interview at fightnews.com, Cotto said “Emanuel Steward [Cotto’s trainer], I know with all his instruction and boxing knowledge, we would have a better fight and we would win the fight.” I kind of doubt it. And I wouldn’t want to pay the $50 to $60 to find out, either. I can already see the outcome in my mind and I don’t see a pretty picture for Cotto. He would get chopped to little pieces by Pacquao and seriously hurt.
