Pascal defeats Dawson by 11 round technical decision

By Jim Dower: Chad Dawson (29-1, 17 KO’s) lost to World Boxing Council light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (26-1, 16 KO’s) tonight by an 11 round technical decision in a failed attempt to recapture the World Boxing Council light heavyweight title at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada. Dawson threw punches sparingly, saving them as if he was afraid to lose something by letting them go. In the meantime, Pascal built up an overwhelming lead on the scorecards going into the 11th round. In that round, Dawson had an exhausted Pascal looking hurt when Dawson was cut over the eye by a head butt. It was too nasty of a cut for the fight to be allowed to continue. The final judges scorecards were 108-101, 106-103, and 106-103.

With this win, Pascal could end up taking a fight that was meant for Dawson against IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute, who like Pascal, is based out of Canada. It would be a huge fight in Canada, and it likely will do well in the United States after Pascal won a number of new fans tonight with his win over Dawson.

It’s hard to say what would have happened had Dawson not suffered the cut from the head clash in the 11th. It looked like he had Pascal in a bit of trouble, and it’s anyone’s guess whether Pascal would have been able to survive the round and also the 12th. Pascal would have been under some major fire from Dawson, and Pascal did not look good at this time in the fight. If Pascal fades like he did tonight in against Bute, I think Pascal won’t make it to the finish. Bute would likely take him out, cut or no cut.
