Dirrell: “I’m in a do or die situation right now”

By Scott Gilfoid: After losing a controversial 12 round unanimous decision to WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch on October 17th, Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KO’s) finds himself in a must win situation when he enters the ring for his second fight of the Super Six tournament against Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KO’s) on March 27th at the Agua Caliente Casino, in Rancho Mirage, California. Dirrell probably is the most skilled fighter in the entire super middleweight division, with speed and moves similar to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

However, in light of the deeply questionable 12 round split decision loss to Froch, a loss which some people refer to as home town brewing, Dirrell has his back against the wall needing a win to make sure he can get to the semi finals of the tournament. In an article at theFlint Journal, Dirrell says “I’m in a do-or-die situation right now.”

Dirrell, 26, injured his back recently while training. The back injury caused Dirrell to postpone his March 6th fight and move it three weeks ahead to the 27th. Dirrell talks about the injury which occurred during a sparring session, “I believe when I turned him and went to throw the right hand, my body wasn’t all the way turned. I reached over to hit him and threw something out. We had the doctor take a look at it, and he told me to take a break.”

Three weeks isn’t very much time for an injury as serious as back problem to heal. Let’s hope that Dirrell will be ready by March 27th, because he might be showing too much courage by trying to come back this soon. But even if he’s not completely back and functioning at half of his optimal level, I think Dirrell will beat the slow and limited Abraham.

Dirrell is much faster than Abraham, better on defense and the much better mover of the two. Abraham is more of a plodder, a fighter that walks his opponents down with a high guard and the bum rushes them with wild combinations. He can punch hard, but nowhere near as hard as some people think he does. He hurt Taylor in the 9th round with a lead right hand and then followed through with his right elbow that landed with a thudding force.

For fans that missed the slow motion replay of the blow, they mistakenly thought that Taylor had been hurt by a right hand alone. But if you watch the fight again and pay close attention, you’ll see the elbow that Abraham landed and the immediate reaction with Taylor staggering around the ring like a drunk.

Abraham says this about the postponement: “Of course I was disappointed when I first head of the postponement, but I am happy to take on Dirrell on March 27. I want him to be in top shape so that he has no excuses once I am done with him. This is the Super Six World Boxing Classic, the best fighting against the best, so I can understand he does not want to face me when he is not at 100 percent.”

It’s good that Abraham isn’t taking a negative outlook on the injury to Dirrell. However, Abraham is deceiving himself if he thinks he’s going to win. Abraham will be the one losing, not Dirrell. I just hope that Abraham doesn’t have any weak excuses to make once the fight is over. Dirrell is going to beat him so conclusively that no one will be able to say anything about the fight, because it will be such a clear cut win by Dirrell.

dirrell is already cheating before the fight, so i expect a dirty hit and hold game not a fight.
the coach of abraham hast to fly back with arthur because he has another championship fight there (marco huck) – what a coincidence…
dirrell has not the spirit and experience to fight a guy like arthur. maybe it´s to early (in general) for him, maybe he´s just not a fighter and should have choosed another sport. ward is the real newcomer not dirrell.

  • KO says:

Ask Miranda if AA punches hard :) )))

  • LEE COOOO says:

Dirrell has skills the likes mayweather, that is the funniest thing scott has wrote yet.
I dont know if you watched the froch fight properly scott, your ‘talented’ dirrell was good for 5 rounds then he was sh*te. Ive never seen floyd be like that in any of his fights.

  • Ukansodoff says:

Against Froch he found himself in a situation where he needed to grit his teeth, use his brain, and battle through, it was a world title fight. But he couldnt do it, after 5 rounds of schooling the Brit going got much tougher and he he chose to sink rather than swim, die rather than do.

Hes a young man with a bag full of talent and potential but has very little top class experience, and i think its the lack of expeience that lost him that fight.

Hes guna need to be more prepared with plenty of tactics against Abraham though because i believe its guna be a harder fight than his last 1.

I think Dirrel is weakened by the fight with Froch and that is why he is pretending to have back trouble. Dirrel’s best bet is to withdraw now from the super 6 sooner than mess people around.

scott stop writing articles about your lover. its only gonna take one or two punches from king abraham & its goodnight sweetheart.

  • NAZ says:

People need to stop giving this idiot the attention, don’t u get it he likes it. His and Dirrell’s occupation is on a sand timer , they both gonna be lookin for a new occupation come march 28th

  • Vandal says:

Scotty, how about doing some real reporting and find out what the new venue for the fight is? I had tickets for the March 6 show and have been told they won’t be going back to Agua Caliente (Doobie Brothers are booked for March 27).

Arthur knocks him out regardless of date, time, place…

  • derek says:

  • kev121 says:

  • Pete says:

“a loss which some people refer to as home town brewing” – Not some people, just you.

“Three weeks isn’t very much time for an injury as serious as back problem to heal” – I pulled a muscle in my back and it took less then a week to heal.

“Dirrell is going to beat him so conclusively that no one will be able to say anything about the fight, because it will be such a clear cut win by Dirrell” – I’m copy and pasting that quote. If Dirrell loses then I’m using it, it’s going in my ‘Scott Pot’.

    Funny.

  • graham says:

Cool it Scott, it’s beginning to sound like a love affair between you and Dirrell.
Yes Dirrell has a chance of beating Arthur Abraham but in order to do this Dirrell needs to take control away from Abraham. He will have to unsettle him early and send him looking for plan B. To do this, Dirrell will need to keep a steady tempo so he’ll have to slow down a bit for him not to get tired too early. The trick will be to convince Abraham that his usual tactics will not work, not necessarily hurting him. If he’s disciplined enough, Dirrell could get a UD.

  • Duvo says:

Dirrell did a good thing and making sure his back was okay for this one. As he said, he’s had the pain before (and ignored it before) but this time he’s being a little more careful about it. Fair play to him for it. He should also make sure to catch Pacquiao-Clottey for a little bit of gameplanning! Go get it Dre, everyone with an unbiased set of eyes knows you whooped Froch, go harder on AA

  • dab says:

your right scott dirrell will beat AA the only chance AA got is a punchers

  • John,e says:

Scott sounds like your showing some hesitancy in your writing could it be your getting cold feet the same as Dirrell!!!!!Abraham to stop him by Knock out.

  • b burroughs says:

When dirrel looses and he will, what will be your excuse.Let me think, its a hard one to figure out.No wait,i bet you blame it on dirrels injury.

  • Hudson says:

You are so full of it. He was too scared to fight and man up to Froch…ran more than Haye did against Valuev.

I think you should stop writing about boxing you know nothing.

    Fool.
