Ward vs. Abraham: Andre ready to eliminate Arthur from the Super Six

By Scott Gifloid: My how things have changed rapidly since the Super Six tournament started. At one time, Arthur Abraham (31-2, 25 KO’s) was considered to be the guy that many boxing fans thought would be the eventual winner of the Super Six tourney after stopping Jermain Taylor in the 12th round in October 2009. Gullible boxing fans, who were seeing Abraham for the first time, wrongly came up with the idea that he was a sure fire winner because of his one-punch knockout win over the depleted Taylor.

Instead of realizing that Taylor had some lingering problems coming into the tournament that may have affected hm in the Abraham fight, these fans came to the conclusion that Abraham was going to win the tourney. Those thoughts were quickly dashed when the talented Andre Dirrell gave Abraham a boxing lesson in a one-sided 11th round disqualification win in 2010. Abraham, badly behind in the fight and desperate for a knockout, fouled Dirrell after he slipped on the canvas in the 11th round.

Dirrell was then awarded the win due to Abraham being disqualified. Carl Froch, who had lost his WBC super middleweight tittle to Mikkel Kessler last April, was able to watch the Dirrell-Abraham fight and take the blueprint that Dirrell had so expertly put together to beat Abraham on his own. Froch was further helped by the fact that Abraham had over-trained for the fight and didn’t have the energy that he usually had in his fights.

Now, with those two losses weighing him down, Abraham is taking on what could very well be the best remaining fighter in the Super Six tournament in the unbeaten Andre Ward (23-0, 13 KO’s) in a fight that will likely take place in May. This is like going from bad to worse for Abraham, because Ward has been a pure gold in defeating Kessler and Allan Green in the tournament. And recently, Ward easily beat top super middleweight contender Sakio Bika by a 12 round lopsided decision last November. Ward schooled a very good fighter in Bika and made it look like child’s play. I hate to say this but Abraham doesn’t have a chance against Ward in this fight. It’s going to be far worse than the whipping that Dirrell put on Abraham. This is going to be downright embarrassing what Ward ends up doing with Abraham.
