Porter vs. Brook won’t be taking place on August 9th, will be another date

porter5By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like #1 IBF Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KO’s) is going to have to wait a little longer before he gets his title shot against IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KO’s), because Dan Rafael of ESPN is saying that the Brook-Porter fight won’t be taking place on August 9th. The fight will be taking place on another date. It’s unclear when right now.

Rafael said on his twitter, “I am told @ShowtimeShawnP vs. @SpecialKBrook will NOT be on the 8/9 card in Brooklyn. Will be some other date, if at all.”

So there it is. Brook is going to need to put a sock in it and stop yakking about how he’s going to beat Porter and this and that, because he’s going to need to wait a little while longer. I’m just wondering if Porter will be taking an optional title defense against someone like Robert Guerrero before facing Brook.

That would make a lot of sense because there would be far more interested in a Porter-Guerrero fight than a match-up between Porter and Brook. That fight will only interest hardcore boxing fans in the U.S, because Brook hasn’t done anything to increase his visibility in the U.S during his career. As such, Brook is an unknown and the likely ratings for a Porter-Brook fight will be horrible beyond belief for Showtime. I wouldn’t be surprised if they flat out refused to televise the fight unless it were on an undercard of a more important matchup between known fighters that casual fans have heard of.

The Brook-Porter fight was supposed to take place at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Whether the fight will still be taking place at the venue after its rescheduled is unclear. It seems to me that it would be better off in Las Vegas rather than New York, where neither fighter has any fans.

Porter has looked sensational in his last two fights in stomping Paulie Malignaggi and Devon Alexander. Porter showed in those fights that he really upped his game from how he was fighting just two years ago when he was struggling to beat the likes of Julio Diaz.

Brook still hasn’t taken the training wheels off in terms of facing quality opposition. In his last fight, he beat some guy named Alvaro Robles. In his previous fight, he beat an aging fighter from the past in Vyacheslav Senchenko. Why Brook was fighting the likes of Senchenko instead of a relevant contender in the welterweight division is unclear. Whatever the case, Brook was staggered in that fight and failed to impress. Brooks other big fights have come against Matthew Hatton and Carson Jones. Those were actually the best guys Brook has faced during his career, which is very, very disappointing.
