Ortiz-Campbell: Victor now has to prove he has what it takes against a veteran who blows hot and cold

By Peter Wells: It is just under a year ago now that we saw Victor Ortiz on the brink of stardom against a tough opponent but an opponent that was beatable. Ortiz wouldn’t be in this situation tonight if he had beaten Marcos Maidana, but instead it’s his second chance to prove he’s worthwhile. His opponent this time is a tough veteran in Nate Campbell, who has moved up to Light Welterweight from Lightweight. He has held many titles at 135lbs and it seems too late to make the same impact at 140.

Campbell is a fighter who blows hot and cold, for instance, he was on fire beating young hot shot Juan Diaz and then edging out lanky South African Ali Funeka. Then he looked completely outmatched in his 140lbs debut against another star Timothy Bradley, but got a no-contest after being cut and pulled out in round 3. Despite not going very far he was still outclassed and looked as though he could have been heading to a big defeat.

For Ortiz this should be a simple task, but boxing is anything but simple. He has fought twice since his second defeat (both stoppages) but hasn’t looked the same and going back against a fighter like ‘The Galaxxy Warrior’ could prove a bad risk. Nate has won 33 and lost 5 and won all but 8 by knockout, and only been stopped 2 times.

Ortiz’s two defeats though make it harder for him to make himself an attractive superstar and a poor performance tonight could be the final body blow. He’s 15 years Nate’s junior and 2 inches taller, and like Campbell is not feather fisted, he has won 21 of his 26 victories by knockout and also has a sole draw. Nate may just be passed it now and the fight will most likely be to see how good Victor’s performance is.

Ortiz will not take risks until he has Nate in big trouble and will be content on sticking to boxing and adding the power punches in. Campbell will look to neutralise all his advantages but will be outgunned. The younger fighter will finally start to go for it in the latter stages and stop Campbell in the 11th round, in an unattractive display, but it’ll be worth a watch and to see if Nate can spring an upset.
