Mayweather-Mosley: Americas Best Face Off

By Omar Feliciano: It’s the biggest fight since Trinidad-De La Hoya or perhaps Mayweather-De La Hoya and believe it, millions will be watching tonight as the two best American boxers, who also happen to be two of the best fighters on this entire planet, will go head to head and take it to the ring tonight, May 1st, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand. This really is a bout of significance not just in boxing but in sports, period.

Boxing has carried, at times, the world on its shoulders, has rallied millions together and has provided any given group of people a sense of victory at one point in time or another. It may not seem to be the relevance of Jack Johnson and James J. Jeffries, Joe Luis and Max Schmelling, Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LoMotta or Ali and Frazier, but in a sense, it is.

Boxers carry legacy, pride, their identity and that of their families and country into the ring; risking their lives in order to, if just for a moment, touch the realm of greatness. They know the risks, we know the risks, but that’s what makes a champion. Both tonight are champions and one will remain at least for a while.

Be it skill, strength, speed, power, accuracy, tenacity, defense, intelligence, will or heart, none will be lacking in the “squared circle”. For what one lacks, the other carries in his arsenal and will use it to his advantage. Those who watch this bout will see “all-time greatness” in the ring, something that does not come around every year, or every decade for that matter, but its here tonight.

A difficult fight to analyze or predict but there is one thing that makes it easier to do so in boxing no matter the fight. Boxers tend to rarely ever change their tactics or styles throughout their careers. Mosely for the most part, fights the way his opponent fights (he boxes a boxer and brawls a brawler) and Mayweather has always been lightning quick to the counterpunch and very defensive (watch a great fighter throughout a significant time span and you may notice this) so this will most likely go as many of us think, a UD for “Money”.

However, there is a first time for everything, as they say, but no, today will not be the first time we see Mayweather lose in my opinion but it may well be the first time we see Mayweather meet the canvas. Look for Mayweather to “weather” the early storm that Mosely will try to create and begin to connect at a high rate after round three and cut the older Mosely to an 11 or 12 round TKO.
