Image: Angel Garcia: Amir Khan is a nobodyBy William Mackay: Angel Garcia, the father and trainer of unbeaten WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KO’s), had some choice words to say about former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) as they head into their July 14th fight in Las Vegas. Garcia sees Khan as a fraud, and a protected fighter who feels is overhyped by the boxing public.

Speaking to RingTV.com, Angel Garcia said “I never met a Pakistani that can fight. I’m not trying to sound racist. I’m just being honest…The key to beating Amir Khan is going in and beating the s*** out of him. That’s the f****** game plan. This guy has never fought a Peurto Rican in his goddamn life. Khan is a nobody…He is a European fighter from Europe. Danny’s an American fighter.”

Angel went onto say that Khan was brought along as being the next Naseem Hamed, but that he doesn’t have Hamed’s skills. Angel sees Khan as being protected by his trainer Freddie Roach, who Angel isn’t impressed with either.

This is going to be an interesting fight if Danny Garcia comes into the fight with as much intensity and hunger as his father Angel talks about. Having a father as a trainer can sometimes bring out the most in a fighter, because he doesn’t want to fail his dad. Garcia will fight with a lot of aggression and make this a really difficult fight for Khan just as Lamont Peterson did last December. Garcia has an advantage of having that blueprint there for him from the Peterson-Khan fight to follow.

Additionally, Khan likely won’t be able to get away with all the shoving and pulling down on Garcia’s head like he did in his past fights. The Peterson bout will very likely have the referee ready to warn Khan as soon as he starts shoving and pulling down on Garcia’s head on July 14th. Without Khan being able to use those tools, he could be in for a long night of having points taken away from him. I think Khan will use those fouls as much as he’s one in the past, because they’re too much ingrained within his game. But the difference here is he’ll lose points and that will hurt his chances of winning the fight.
