Sullivan Barrera: I’m going to wear Andre Ward down

ward555By Dan Ambrose: Undefeated #1 IBF light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) plans on making it a war in his fight against 31-year-old Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) this month on March 26th on HBO Boxing from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

Barrera believes that his punching power is going to be the major factor in him beating Ward. He sees Ward as a fighter whose inactivity in recent years is going to hurt him in this fight, because he plans on taking the fight to him from the first round. Barrera says he’s going to hit Ward everywhere to wear him down and then take him out.

Barrera wants to be the one that challenged IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev for his titles later on this year. The only way that Barrera can be the one that faces Kovalev is by beating Ward. A loss to Ward will mean that Barrera will need to get back in line to work his way back to a number one spot again.

That’s something that would take Barrera a long time to do though. Kovalev isn’t going to just pick Barrera as an opponent for a voluntary defense because he’s too dangerous and too talented.

Andre Ward vs. Sullivan Barrera analysis

ward31323By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre “SOG” Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) will be taking on the toughest opponent in many years next month when he faces unbeaten Cuban Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) on March 26 in a 12 round fight on HBO from the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California.

Ward might not want to admit it but Barrera is easily the best opponent he has faced since his fight against Carl Froch in 2011, and he might even be a better fighter than Froch. Barrera certainly is a better boxer than Froch, and he has better defense and a superior inside game.

Ward will have difficult fight against Sullivan Barrera, says Sanchez

ward5By Tim Fletcher: Abel Sanchez, the trainer for unbeaten Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs), thinks Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) is going to have a very difficult fight against Barrera on March 26, and he feels this fight is going to answer a lot of questions about both fighters.

Ward just turned 32-years-old today, and he must win this fight to keep on path to fight IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev on November 19 on HBO. Ward wanted to take a difficult tune-up in his first fight at 175, and he’s got a tough one in Barrera, who is the biggest fighter and the biggest puncher that Ward has ever fought before.

Ward-Barrera will be televised on HBO from the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California. This is a really hard fight on paper for Ward because he’s not been an active fighter since 2011.

Andre Ward must beat Sullivan Barrera to get to Kovalev

ward7By Jeff Aranow: Rightly or wrongly, Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) has put himself into a tight spot with him having to beat a very good fighter in #1 IBF Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) on March 26 in Ward’s first true fight at light heavyweight in the pro ranks.

Ward needs to defeat Barrera in order to get a much bigger fight against IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev on November 19. However, if Ward loses his fight against Barrera, then he could forget about a fight against Kovalev.

Andre Ward will fight twice before Sergey Kovalev match, says Duva

ward56By Dan Ambrose: Kathy Duva, the promoter for unbeaten light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) and IBF/WBA/WBO 175lb champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, says that Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) will be fighting twice before his November fight against Kovalev.

Duva says it’s Ward’s plans to get in two interim fights before he faces Kovalev. Duva thinks this is a risky thing for Ward to do because it means there are two chances that he can get beaten before he ever gets to a fight against Kovalev.

The thing is if Ward loses to anyone before November, then that means there will not be a Kovalev-Ward fight. Duva would obviously be happy if one of her Main Events fighters like Barrera is the guy that beats Ward.

Andre Ward compares himself with Floyd Mayweather Jr

ward6By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) admits that he’s starting to slow down as a fighter in the ring now that he’s getting older at 31-years-old. Ward, who has fought only three times in the last five years, is facing one of the best light heavyweights in the division next month in fighting unbeaten Cuban Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) on March 26 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

Ward sees himself in the same situation as Floyd Mayweather Jr. was in during the last part of his career after he moved up to the welterweight division. Mayweather didn’t/couldn’t move around the ring as he had when he was fighting at super featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight.

Mayweather had to be stationary compared to earlier in his career. While Mayweather says he intentionally stood in the pocket in order to please his fans, it was clear that he was forced to do it because his old legs could not move him around as they previously had.

Andre Ward: Sullivan Barrera will have a chance to back-up his talk on March 26

ward544By Tim Fletcher: The negotiations for the March 26 fight between former WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) and unbeaten #1 IBF light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) is now a done deal and the fight is official. The Ward-Barrera fight will be taking place at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. The fight will be televised on HBO.

Ward, 31, is looking forward to the contest because he wants to see the 33-year-old Barrera try and back-up his tough talk that he’s been making lately outside of the ring. Ward is motivated for this fight and he cannot wait to face Barrera in what will be Ward’s first real fight in the 175lb division.

Ward is moving up in weight from 168 to 175 in hopes of making a mark in the division. Ward had already played out the super middleweight division a long time ago, and he was faced with the reality that the new crop of top fighters in the division weren’t in the least interested in facing him.
